Skoda Dealer Service?

The MoT test was fine today, there were no advisories recorded but again the free vehicle health check suggested new front discs, although this time at a lower cost of £235. I still don't think it will be necessary in the next 30,000 miles so some time next week I'll find out my digital micrometer and measure it myself...

During the test I did take the opportunity to conduct a reconnaissance on the King's Lynn VW Centre, an independent that seems just fine (covers VW, Audi and Skoda, seems to have all the right equipment). The cost for a major service (which the 40,000 mile one will be) is about £190, but this also includes an MoT (so saving £40). I'm fairly sure I'll try them out instead of the main dealer next year, although I'll miss chatting with the pretty blond receptionist :-)

Once out of warranty I go straight to an independent. The front discs on mine were replaced a couple of months ago (80k miles). I knew they were due as I've been tracking the thickness (one day I'll get a life). Main dealers have some big overheads, such as rent in expensive areas, but I see little point in using them if they are significantly more expensive than independents (assuming the independents know what they are doing!).

Do you happen to know the minimum thickness for the disc material? I'll find my digital micrometer next week and see how far from the limit they are (I know, I also need to get a life ...).

I was hoping for a question like this, and have dug out my file.....

22mm min thickness for the front and 10mm min thickness for the rear discs (this is what my OEM discs had stamped on them, you should check that yours are the same, see photo below).

Have fun, and don't forget you'll need discs and pads when it comes time to replace them.

Many thanks Matt, I feel empowered with that information.

Well, sad man that I am, I've just measured the thickness of my front discs with a digital micrometer. The discs are 24.7 mm (both sides). New discs are 25 mm, minimum thickness is 22 mm; so these are far inside the tolerance.

The dealership has been flying a kite over this issue, which rather confirms I should be taking it somewhere else.

Discs, pads and tyres....i dont even think about em....just replace

Indie garage quoted £175 to supply+fit rears inc vat, not sure of brand...

Mintex £67 from local parts shop....mobile mechanic £30 to fit (on the 2013 greenline with 272 dia discs?)

The above just add to the justification of emailing Skoda customer services.

They'll have a lip and rust but are still serviceable , don't know what the spec is regarding the minimum thickness

Well my 63 plate facelift was in for a service and MOT last week, this is the last service under warranty which ends at the end of this month. I was prepared to pay for the 3rd year service but I got some good news that the previous owner had taken out a service plan and I got the service for nought and only had to pay for the MOT.

The dealer once they had done their health check stated I had some stepping on the 2 front tyres and tried to sell me two of the same for £110 each. I said no thanks and let it go through the MOT which didn;t even mention them as an advisory. so i'll swap front to back and get more years out of the them.

From now on my work will be done by a couple of chaps in Rugby who only work at the weekend and charge a lot less than main dealers, They have been servicing my Rovers and Fiat  for over 10 years and I trust them completely. Its a bit of a drive from Peterborough but that's the price you've got to pay for quality work. If anyone wants any contact details let me know.

I did fill in the questionnaire that Skoda sent me by mail with the details of the front discs. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of it.
