In a nutshell, it is a cable and software used for identifying faults, modifying and fiddling......

Some of the dealer/manufacturer chargeable extras are easily enabled using VCDS. Look at the VCDS adaptations pinned at the beginning to get a flavour as to what can be done. 

Just be wary of fake cables sold on the web.

Do not buy a 'cheap' Ebay cable as they are rip-offs and will not support newer cars and cause serious issues if used for mods
