Sporadic engine behavior and high vibration at idle or low revs

Featured Replies

Hello there,

I'm seeking advice from experienced Skoda owners or car mechanics/electricians. The problem is quite intermittent, I'm noticing it every other week (but now it seems to be more frequent). Usually it happens when I drive for about 20 mins at 70 mph. When I'm about to stop, the revs go down and I'm feeling a noticeable vibration and the engine produces a different, distinct noise as if something is wrong with the firing sequence or the fuel/air mixture is too lean (my personal guess).

The other day it happened when I was driving around the city, ~5 minutes after I'd started it up.

I bought the car around a month ago. It had a cam belt change.

Please help to pinpoint the cause of the problem! I'll post a YouTube video soon.

Car details: Fabia Estate Mk2 2010 1.6 tdi 105bhp

Many thanks!

It's a diesel, so the issue is not "mixture too lean". Diesels run lean at all times except possibly full throttle at low revs (which is when you get black smoke from them).

Given the recent cam belt change, my first thought would be that the fuel timing was not properly set up afterwards.

KenONeill, thanks for your reply! Could you please elaborate a little bit what does "fuel timing set-up" involve? Also, how would you explain it's intermittent nature? Many thanks!

Fuel timing - the time on the compression stroke at which fuel is injected.

Set-up - The adjustment of the fuel timing to correct for the new timing belt being unstretched; needs a suitable engine computer.

Here is the video; should be listened to at high volume.
