Oil Warning Light

Featured Replies

Yesterday the Low Oil Warning light came on (Amber light) now admittedly I don't check it as often as I should but is it normally for this to come on so soon?

The car is a petrol vRS that's 4 months old and done 4.5k miles.

I happened to my close to the dealers so nipped in and they topped it up saying it was perfectly normal but I've never owned a car that uses oil before, they have always run service to service without needing topping up?

Did you check it when you collected the car new, and when have you last checked it.

Perfectly normal that some oil can be used and more in the first 5,000 km as explained in the Owners Manual on

'Driving in'  (Running in.)

Obviously many engines use no oil, but then a quick check when checking your tyre pressures and resetting your TPMS usually

tells you if the level is dropping.

I'll be watching it like a hawk now obviously... I guess I should have been anyway

Appreciate the reply I was just wondering what experience others had with their new cars

Cheers

My 1.4 used a litre by 5000kms, then another half by 15000. Hasn't used any since.

keep an eye on it and look for oil spots on your driveway/garage floor.  Its not unusual to burn some in a new engine but not a cert.  Mine has never used a drop....yet.

I topped mine up with half-a-litre after about 6k miles. Then it was fine until 20k miles when my Missues glances a small rock and split the plastic sump. I think it is normal for engines to burn a little oil within the first year. So long as it doesn't need regular topups it'll be fine.

There is more than half-litre difference between the min & max marker on the dipstick, so most people will burn oil between services and never see a light, because the oil is topped-up or replaced for them during servicing.

Small turbo engines seem exceptionally susceptible to oil loss early in their life.
