Trolly Jack, needs more oil..........

Featured Replies

My Trolly jack looks like it needs oil. If you jack up a car it comes down very slowly, will any oil do, Do you put oil in then the jack is fully down, how much do you put in or shall I just bin it and buy a new one.

I've have this one for years and cost about £25 when new.

Halfords are doing various 2 ton Trolly jacks for under £20

Your thoughts please

Thanks

AG

I've used a Halfords trolley Jack for years and never had a problem, so why not :)

May as well buy a new one, it's done well.

I'd replace if I were you. Could be the seal failing if it's loosing pressure and dropping the car of its own accord.

Not really worth the risk of something happening to you, or the car.

Sound advice there Steve.  I'll take it to the tip.   Do you think Mrs G has been tampering with it.  After my Pension pot and life insurance

Haha, never rule anything out.... ;)

I got my last one at Machine Mart, some good deals usually. I got a nice low-profile Clarke one

So let's get this clear Auric, you're having trouble keeping it up?

One of my SGS Engineering jacks has started doing this and not going up as high as it should (I have two so easy to compare). Lasted just long enough for the warranty to run out :(

When I went into halfords at the weekend they was doing an offer of half price on garage equipment, including trolley jacks. Didn't check the price but brought some axel stands for £12.

General rule of thumb for hydraulics, if it's not getting to its full height it's generally low oil.

If it's sinking it's leaking either internally, normally a valve or seal. Or the main seal on the piston.

Personally I'd do as others have said. Buy a new one considering the cost of a decent Jack these days.

You might like to consider a high lift one as that could also be more suitable for the time when you get a 'taller' car Andy. ;)

Do you mean like your White Van with Windows John ?  :notme:

Exactly! I didn't fully appreciate that a taller one would have been better so I wouldn't like others to make the same mistake.
