Dash cam wiring

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

I'm fairly certain I've seen this, or something like this, before but may be just having a moment...

When I get my new Yeti, I would like to run a switched live up to the glasses case in the roof, so I can bring a feed out for dash cams, etc.

How do I remove the cover over the A pillar and glasses case and is it possible to feed a wire between the two, without removing the roof lining?

Any suggestion or alternatives very welcome.

Many thanks.

The A pillar cover just pulls off. You need to give it a firm tug though and watch for the airbag behind it.

Why would you like to run a switched live to the glasses case?

The dashcam normally sits behind the mirror and it's easy to run the cable along the top of windscreen tucking it in the gap between that and the headlining.

Ah yes

This is why I need guidance

Still need to know how to get A pillar cover off - scared of just pulling it

You might find that the power cable will push behind the A-pillar trim without having to remove it.  I haven't checked on the Yeti but it is possible on other cars.

Does the "A" pillar have an air bag in it? I am aware that I have seven air bags in my Yeti (SE - MY 2011) - of that I am sure. I thought the positions were:

  1. Driver (Steering Wheel)
  2. Driver ( Knee)
  3. Front passenger (dashboard)
  4. Driver Side (inside seat)
  5. Passenger Side (inside seat)
  6. Right side Head (Roof lining - projected downwards)
  7. Left side Head (Roof lining - projected downwards)

Now that makes my seven. Does anyone know differently? I would appreciate knowing if this list is wrong as I am about to install my own Mobius Dash Cam and wanted to be sure I do not compromise an air bag should it need to actuate. I'm sure that I have read of a good many people who "shoved" the wiring in here. It would be good to confirm that no one has compromised the air bags if they have done so...................

Thanks in advance .................tony

You can tuck the wire under the roof headlining and then under the rubber seal along the door edge of the A - pillar, so no need to remove the trim.

I have done just this on many cars incl the Yeti.

The APillar trim does indeed pull off, if you pull away the door seal slightly where it runs past the trim it will reveal one of the edges. I dont really think that there is enough room to run the wire down there to be honest, if you could a chance that it could 'chaff or rub'. So just use your fingers and pull the trim off bit by bit, its just clipped on in three or four places and the bottom section is tucked to the side of the top of the dash. It is really simple. The airbag is attached to the metal of the pillar, not to the trim and so shouldn't get in the way.

Take the cover from the fuse box (it will probably just 'hang' there as there is a lug that holds it in place. Do the electrical work and you should see that there is a cable run from the fuse box up the side and onto the A-Pillar. Do not cross over the airbag, run the cable to the side but not over it, you can use existing fixings to attach it to. Once at the top you should be able to push the cable between the headlining and the windscreen.

I would leave an extra couple of inches of cable if you can so if you change dashcam, the cable will reach to a new position..... most are micro usb and are 5V so most will be able to use this power source.

Does the "A" pillar have an air bag in it?

Hi Tomo

Thanks for the detailed instructions - Most useful!!!! Especially the warnings regarding routing the cable

Sorry if this comes over as nit-picking. It most certainly is not meant to be so. I have seen one or two people on here who have routed the cable behind the edge of the door trim and ACROSS the top of the "A" pillar internal trim to the headlining! If, as you say, there is an Air Bag inside this pillar area. Actuation of the Air Bag will cause the cable and ultimately the device it's attached to to become a projectile hazard!

Can you definitely confirm the presence of an Air Bag in the "A" pillar?  Again, I'm not wanting to come over as a doubting Thomas [No pun intended!] but all the information that I can find does not show an Air Bag there. Check out the official "Rescue Data" issued to all emergency services etc by Skoda. (Copy attached) All my original bumph; purchase catalogue, owners manual etc refer to the air bags being where I pointed out in post #6 and I think it important that we refer to the correct position so as to not mislead anyone on the grounds of safety. I'm sure you would agree...........................Tony

Agree with the above.

You can pull the front we of the head lining down far enough to get the wire up into there.

There is also enough movement in the A pillar trim to run the cable down the back edge, between the trim and rubber door seal.

It will also go neatly into the fuse box from there.

Use the fuse for the rear wiper.

Can't remember exactly which one but it's in the middle of either the 1st or 2nd row from the left edge as you, look at the board.

I seem to recall that mine (2013 pre F/L) does have an airbag behind the 'A' pillar trim. however there are already wires running up the pillar next to the airbag and I simply routed my dashcam wire with those already there. The first picture in the following post shows the airbag quite clearly (same on drivers side).

Thanks Jim!  - Your link shows it most clearly.

So there we have it! The "Head" Air Bag runs part way down the "A" pillar. Contrary to Skoda's own diagram!

That means that crossing any wires across the pillar from the door seal towards the windscreen MUST be done at low level, down towards dash board level! To do otherwise, unless the cable is routed behind the Air Bag, would lead to the air bag operation being compromised. A badly routed cable could prevent the Air Bag deploying as it is designed too. And / or, whatever the cable is attached too, being turned into a projectile!

I, for one, will never handle an Air Bag. I have seen the results of people who have been seriously injured when one has deployed whilst a vehicle was being worked on. So when I come to wire the Mobius dash cam into our new [it's on the Ship!!!!] I shall follow the example of Muddyjim and route the cables following the line of the other cables etc by the screen.

Most sincere thanks to all those who contributed to this part of the thread. I did not doubt your narrative. It's just that it was contrary to what Skoda themselves had said. (Who would have thought it!   :notme:   :x ). It needed clearing up before anyone risked getting hurt............Tony

I could be wrong, but I think the A pillar trim is designed to split apart when the airbag deploys, so it won't ping off and embed itself in your head.
