Co2 emissions on 2.0ltr 170bhp

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a 170bhp 64 plate elegance hatchback/saloon and the annual road tax is £30 co2 120g/km! After my mate seeing my car he has now purchased an elegance I said make sure it's a 170bhp for the extra oooomph as it's a big bus!

He buys a 170bhp elegance estate said the road tax was £110 1st I thought he had bought a 140bhp but he's adamant it's a 170bhp! I checked DVLA & his is 122g/km £110 it's on a 15 plate only difference is his is an estate & one year younger!

Only other difference is his mfd display shows his navigation as well ???? also he's only getting low 40's mpg when am high 40's/low 50's!!

Is this because it's an estate & it's definitely a 170bhp????

The later cars like my 63 plate reduced their CO2 by some means to get the tax down to £30 a year. The later 2.0 litre EA189 170's were a more efficient engine.

The hatchback is a little bit more aerodynamic (lower drag) than the estate so it gets slightly better economy. Since CO2 emissions are directly tied to fuel consumption that's where the difference arises.

The estate is 25kg or so heavier as well and as chimaera said, with a drag difference it adds up and explains a 2mg CO2 difference.

That said, I don't get the difference in economy that you mention. There could be a far greater weight difference depending on options fitted (circa 150kg or 2 adults) but you both have Elegance cars, so I'd suspect the weight difference due to options wouldn't be great.

Ar you both the same gearbox (i.e. man or DSG) and is one 4x4? That all makes a difference. Lastly, you are different drivers - you would have to swap cars and drive in the same manner and then compare fuel consumption.

Cheers for the reply guys!

Both cars are manual and both of us are private hire (taxi) this morning we compared mpg & cycled through all the mfd info avg speed ect I had did 9 miles more then him from cold start but apart from that there was nothing in it till mpg he was 41mpg & i was 50mpg I could understand if I was on a motorway distance job & keeping it be low the 80mph but we both have very similar school run as in the route we take there and back!

Measured the boots and there almost the same! Which I thought the estate would have been bigger! Ok he probably gains a bit on how high he could stack a load but that's it!!!

Most of the difference in load capacity is in the height - at then end of the day it is like a hatchback compared to an estate. For those of us with biggish dogs or "high" loads the height requirement only really kicks in. Lastly - the longer roof line means you can put a lot up there if you have to. The cars themselves are exactly the same length from bumper to bumper.

A hotel near me that does a lot of runs to the airport has 3 Superb Hatches and 1 Estate for servicing guests etc. The estate does the runs to Shannon Airport when there's 3 or 4 passengers to send off as they can stack a lot of luggage in the estate rear (there is about 40 litres extra).

That's 3 big dog heads with head swinging room....  :p

Kitkat start using Fuelly as its the only way to compare like for like as the mfd is only an indication and can sometimes be WAY out..

The difference I have found with mine is runs like Glasgow to Manchester airport the mfd is showing high 50s but saturday night work it goes to about low 40s..

Mines is averaging about 13p a mile in the last 6 months which I have just covered 20,000miles in

Also mine is DSG 4X4 Combi(estate) and I dont spare the horses driving it
