Steering wheel airbag removal

Featured Replies

I've now made an executive decision and decided to keep the car (now job means I will be getting a company one). I have used the search buttons but can't find information on how to remove the steering wheel airbag (have a flat bottomed Citigo one instead). I know I have to make sure the key ISN'T in the ignition and disconnect the battery? (really necessary?) but how do I get the airbag out of the wheel? anyone done this? help please?

Thanks

I'll pass this message onto my friend who helped me remove mine :) he's got an account on here as well

Yes, you do need to disconnect the battery. You will need the keys to keep the steering lock off as you need to turn the wheel. Turn it almost 90° either left or right, then you should be able to feel a hole in the back of the wheel. Now you need to use a short, small bladed but fairly strong screwdriver to pop the metal clip that is in this hole out towards the edge of the steering wheel. Its easier to use a phone camera on the front facing mode to help you line it up if you are having difficulty. Once you have the clip removed the bag will pop out on that side. Turn the wheel the other way and repeat the clip removal. Once both sides are free, pull airbag GENTLY away from the wheel, disconnect wiring and then you can change the wheel. You will need a xzn (12 point spline) socket to remove the wheel. To put it back together the airbag just pushes on and clips in. Its really not difficult once you know how to get the clips off. Good luck.

Steering wheel on, slight problem though, having been told that the Fabia airbag will go into the Citgo wheel (I thought it was strange when I was told this) it appears it doesn't it has differnt types of seccuring pins in the Citigo wheel to the Fabia one. Oh well off to look for a Citigo airbag!
