Brake Fluid Change................

Featured Replies

My Fabia vRS is getting near it's 2 years service. I have had the brake conversion done 312 mm discs ect, etc. On this service the Brake fluid needs changing so...Do I have the same sort put in or is there a different one which I can asked to be put in.......................Andy

Just had mine changed to dot 5.1, but it will need changing every 6 months.

Castrol do a dot 4 super, it's synthetic, and will give better feel, and less fade too, under extreme braking.

Avaliable from halfrauds.

why is that? I mean "every 6 months". Is it because of 5.1?

Another question: did you feel a better brake after the liquid change or is it like in case of engine oil, you just do it because it has to be done. I'm curious about what should I expect after the change.

IIRC it's because it's prone to more water retention, but I might be wrong

As said, 5.1 absorbs more water than 4. It's a high spec fluid, ideal for track days. After it's been really cooked a few times, it goes off so to speak.

A brake fluid change at the dealers should cost you about £35, thats what mine cost me.

but how did the brakes feel after the liquid change? Was the breaking improved? A lot, or just placebo ... :)

And becomes dangerous.

No change

I dont do placebo effect. The brakes felt spongy before despite new pads and discs, so I had the fluid changed. No sponginess anymore. Doesnt improve braking either. It just lesssens the effects of heat, when driving hard, repeat use of brakes causes the fluid to heat up, and lose its viscosity. Also it transfers that heat to your brake pipes, then they expand under braking, enhancing the brake fade.

Dot 5.1 is able to absorb much more heat, thus less fade, thus go faster :D

That is because I know the procedure is to change at each 2years. Mine has already 4.5 and did not change it since I drove only 48.000km. My brakes are not great. I did not change yet discs and pads because they have still "meat" on.

I'm not satisfied with the brakes. I will do a liquid change soon, but I wanted to know what should I expect.

Shifty, are you on std. 288's or 312's? Did you go for uprated pads?
