Mobility scooters

Featured Replies

There I am pootling along in my 4 month old Octy SE L and round a slight left hand bend I spot an elderly gentleman about a car's width from the kerb crossing the road on a mobility scooter. Being the gentleman I am I stopped and indicated to him to carry on, He stopped shook his head and backed up onto the pavement. He then acknowledged me and shook his head. I started to proceed and at the same time so did he but as I stopped again he rammed the passenger side front door with his scooter.

I now have a crease in my door and a dented sill.  I got out to remonstrate with the gentleman and because of his obvious mental distress I dialled 999. The police wouldn't attend as they deem the incident as not a RTA.

The gentleman on the scooter became more annoyed and finally declared he was going where upon he sped off on his buggy. I attempted to follow but 7.5 mph is too much for me at 65+. I know the area where he lives but not the precise address. I did ask the police how am I supposed to get the gentleman's name and address without their help but all they say it is a civil matter.

So there I am with a damaged car and no way of claiming recompense. I have front and rear dash cam views of the incident - I have a number plate of the black BMW behind who stopped at the time of the incident. I have very good photographs of the gentleman and his damaged buggy but my insurance (Hastings) doesn't care - they will pay for the damage but I pay the excess of £195 plus, I suspect, loading my premium for a few years.

I intend to de-register my car and re-register it as an invalid buggy and then I can drive where the bloody hell I like and be fireproof.

Sorry to hear about your mishap but you shouldn't of told your insurance. Whether you claim or not they will likely hold this against you next year when you renew your insurance. My partner made the same mistake when somebody clipped her wing mirror when she was stationary but the person claimed it wasn't their fault so we never pursued it any further but it still counted as an accident.

You should of taken the keys out of the scooter and drove off with them, bloody cretin!

Had to tell the insurance - possible new door skin and I want the sill dent knocked out - (well in excess of the £195 I am going to have to pay) - I want the car to look like it did before the prat hit it. I thought about the scooter keys afterwards when it was too late. The same as I should have told the police he was injured or something then they would have come and taken names and addresses and I would have an incident number to give to my insurance company and somebody to pursue for damages although I suspect this may not be worth it.

Sorry to say but the first rule in my book, is only stop at a zebra crossing especially to indicate to people to cross, I hope you get your car fixed but sometimes being to nice & not at the correct time can be costly!
