Which 225/40R18Y Tyres Offer The Best Rim Protection - Definitive Answer Required!

Featured Replies

Afternoon all

I appreciate this is a topic that often comes up, however does anyone have a definitive answer on which 225/40R18Y tyres on the market today offer the best rim protection?

I need to purchase 4 new tyres for my Octavia with the lethally easy to kerb standard anthracite gemini alloy wheels.

To reemphasise, this topic is as stated - the purpose of this topic is not to discuss any other aspect of the tyres other than the rim protection!

Many thanks in anticipation.

Very good rim protection, really very good.

Tigar Syneris 225/40 R18 92Y

As manufactured in the Michelin owned factory & available fitted at ATS Euromaster for only £61.95 each.

(Since you are just asking on protection, no point saying but i will anyway.

Very good in the wet.

Some may say ditch finder, but i have these on my S60 Petrol until i change to my winter Tigar tyres.)

Thanks both for replies.

Should have said, cost is not an issue on these tyres - so I am really looking for the best premium brand options.

The issue I have with the Eagle F1s is that I had the Asymmetric 2 on my old vRS which had great rim protection, I currently have the newer Asymmetric 3s  on the front and rim protection is not existent! They are excellent in every other respect and have lasted over 20k miles - however one scuff which cost me over £100 to repair has put me off ever risking buying tyres without decent rim protection again!

Also, does anyone have experience of the rim protection offered by either the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2? And if these tyres do have good rim protection, how do they perform in other respects?

Thanks very much.

I think the Rim is also to blame for protection, some tyres on some rims don't offer protection where as on other rims they will.

i have pilot sport 4's on fox fx04's not very good but the rims are slightly wider than standard so they lose some of there rim protection

These tyres are not run flat - if they are for your 2012 octavia vrs with the standard 'neptune' alloys they will be perfect.

As you have said, they are long lasting, offer excellent grip and are impressively quiet. At £87 I would go for them!

Mine has factory fitted Bridgestone Potenza S001, Very noisy but how does the rim protection compare to the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 3. I was going to go for these when needed, now having second thoughts.

Rimblades can help.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4's I just had fitted to my Pictoris rims, reasonable rim protection.

Best rim protection is not to drive so close to the kerb.
