rpm issue

Featured Replies

hi all felicia members i have problem with high rpm start move rapidly right and left like this

my car is felicia 97 carb

There is a vacuum leak between the carburettor and the intake manifold. The gasket doesn't seal properly. If the seal is not perfect, the engine will have a rough idle and a high fuel consumption.

i use a vacuum gauge and the meter is on 20 inhg  ????

Oh, now Ii understand what you mean. This morning I was in a hurry and I thought the video shows the engine at idle. Now I see you were doing 95 km/h...

The rpm gauge (tachometer) is jumping left to right between 2500 and 3500 rpm. This is a relatively frequent fault for Felicia. It is a bad contact between the tachometer and the printed circuit board (PCB). After many years of operation, corrosion and vibrations break some contacts.

I will show you in the photos below what to do after you remove the instrument cluster and the tachometer.

1) On the back of the tachometer, clean and resolder the contact marked by the arrow with fresh resin core soldering alloy.

2) On the PCB clean and resolder the 3 pins (red arrows) for the tachometer.

3) Clean and apply fresh soldering alloy on the centre round pad (yellow arrow).

4) Use a good magnifying glass to inspect the copper tracks between above contacts and the integrated circuit of the tachometer (red rectangle). I highly recommend soldering thin insulated wires over those tracks. Sometimes there is continuity when measuring with a multimeter but in fact there are very small cracks in the copper tracks. I said it many times, the German manufacturer of the PCB used the smallest amount of copper for the tracks.

is it easy to remove rpm gauge and how about cleaning with pcb cleaner

"Easy" is a relative term. For me it is easy. For somebody who has never taken out the instrument cluster, it looks difficult.

how about cleaning with pcb cleaner

What do you mean? Your question is too vague. Try to be more specific when you ask something.

There is no need to quote my entire post when you reply. Use the form at the bottom of the page titled Reply to this topic.

I think you didn't understand. Just cleaning with that spray is not enough. Some solder joints are bad and some copper tracks are cracked. You must resolder the joints and repair the tracks with a fine soldering iron, flux, and fine resin core solder.
