Superb III Estate Universal vs Premium Boot Liners

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm picking up my SEL on Saturday and need to get a high-sider boot liner as have 2 large and hairy dogs that have trashed my current car boot (company car so not really bothered!).

I've looked into the premium liners like Hatchbag, Boot-Buddy etc. and they do look great but are very expensive (£150+ when you get the liner/accessories).

There are lots of Universal liners out there that are way cheaper like this sort of thing:

Does anyone have any experience of using something like this and do you really get what you pay for when going for a premium cover?

As this will be my first non-company car for 12 years I really want to make an effort to keep it clean!

PS - looking for advice on a decent/cheap dog guard too!

Thanks

I had Hatchbag liners in my previous Superb, and a Mondeo estate before that. Great liners and the carpets in my boot were like new when I sold the cars on, having had nearly daily hammerings from 3 muddy Springers.

However - I haven't got a liner in my current Superb 3 - went for a Lintran dog crate in the back of the car instead. Up to press everything is great with the Lintran, just lift it out when it is not required, wipes clean, and the boot is still nice and clean too

The problem with universal fit is they are obviously not designed specifically for your vehicle so there will always be compromises.

I initially bought a number of universal covers, but I was constantly adjusting them, or they covered bits I needed access to, or they didn't cover bits that required protection. They also tended to wear out quite quickly.

In the end I bought a Hatchbag and it is almost fit and forget. Had it installed for approximately four years and the rear is in almost as good a state as the day I got it.

The other thing to bare in mind is you can get most of your money back when you sell it on.

It is the same situation with dog guards, after trying several universal ones I ended up with the Skoda OEM one. Never had an issue.

Have to say I always purchase the Hatchbags. They fit like a glove, have all the little touches like the openings for the rear centre ski bit (you know what I mean), seat splits, cover every inch of the boot. When you're looking at protecting £20k plus of car - £150-200 is peanuts! They are so robust too!

I have 2 Border Collies and a rescue mutt... never hoovered a boot out in my life! I always combine the liner with a tailgate guard or crate.

With the Superb, I have gone for a full crate as Barjo already have the spec - Having learned from having my Vectra Estate that doggy noses on the side windows can 'break' the alarm wires and result in frequent glass replacement, or unwelcome noises in the night, the combination of crate in the estate and Hatchbag is unbeatable - even non-doggy friends are impressed.

Ahhh, that's where the rear sunscreens come in handy. No more 'Staffy Art' on the rear screens. It also minimises glass shards coming into the boot in the event of the windows breaking. They also appear to keep the boot cooler.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I'll go for a Hatchbag - does seem silly to quibble over £200 when I'm getting a car that lists with options at £29K!

Probably combine it with a decent dog guard - OEM or Travall.

You won't regret it - I chose a PINK one!!! Haven't bothered with the headrest protector with Leather as they can't come into physical contact with a guard up and the hair won't stick - went for the bumper cover though - protects against any scuffs loading up - not just doggy claws! You can chuck half a tree in without worrying!

Dog guard only - I would always go with the mfr for a good fit!

Non standard - such as dividers, cages and tailgate guards - you simply cannot beat Barjo!

One thing - make sure you use some sort of solvent to get rid of the silicone on the plastic - there's a couple of places you need to adhere velcro direct to the plastic trim and if you don't get it all off the adhesive won't stick :-)

Hatchbag only do liners for estates.

Hatchbag only do liners for estates.

I think that's what the OP has on order.

They may only do them for the Superb estate currently and not hatch.

Generally - they do them for all models - if the demand is there... I had one for my Corsa!

Way back when, it was a small company and they made to order for any vehicle - they've grown/been taken over from the lady who used to stitch them in her kitchen, having trundled off to her local dealership to measure up the car model you were after, and are producing such volumes now they can't do one off's any more. But they do record any enquiries - so if a load of people asked - they would add it to the range.

I called Hatchbag. They no plans to make a hatchback liner. I've gone for one from RhinoUK

Thanks Dogluvr.

My OH would probably love one in Pink but I'll have to put my foot down and get a boring Grey or black one!

One question - does the cover obscure things like the boot torch, boot lights, hooks etc. or are these all above where the liner stops?

Probably won't stop me getting one but would just like to know.

Thanks

Can't figure out how to attach pic from my phone... All bits n bobs are accessible coz it's made for the car! ????

I had to cut inserts for the 12v socket(I just sliced a semi circle flap so that it covers the socket when not in use) and clips/hooks (cut a hole) in my Octy Scout. The material is designed to be cut without fraying or 'running'. There were precut holes for the boot floor hooks. They should state on their website what is precut for the SIII.

I've got a Hatchbag bootliner, yep expensive but well made and mutley hasn't trashed it!

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Ordered a Hatchbag in Blue and a Travall dog guard.

Hopefully they'll keep the boot looking like new :wonder:

  • 3 years later...

Old thread revival! Useful post thanks. I'm just about to buy a hatchbag. I've spoken to them and they weren't quite sure on this. When selecting the product they say it is not compatible with the removable safety net, so I'd have to take it out. However, when the dog isn't in there I'd ideally like the luggage safety net on. The above pictures suggest that the removable net wont be in the way at all and it looks like I can have both. Is anyone able to clarify this please?
