Amundsen MIB to MIB 2

Hi!

Did someone do it? Is it possible?

No, no one done it. Yes, with the right amount of money and knowledge, there seem to be some out there who manage, but it costs over €2000 and component protection has to be disabled.

You are better off going with a 3rd party solution, like the ones Pioneer and Alpine have upcoming.

This guys in Slovenia are replacing it!

EDIT: Possibly they might offer to buy off old MIB I if you get new one from them. Hoping rear lights 2, so I can get FL ones!

Sure, but at what cost? Wouldn't it then be more advantageous to go with the Pioneer/Alpine solution? The Alpine can be had for under 2k - that retrofit is usually north of that value for a setup that is in most senses inferior.

There are reports of guys that did it in VW Golf Mk7 but at around 3k spent. And of course disabling component protection. There is also a firm in Poland doing it.

Well, I have a friend who is a member here and he installed a Alpine on his car (or is about to...) and he has a MIB 2 on the shelf - we are going to make some experiments.

One thing that has me worried is one account I read that it might work in some cases until the car gets plugged to the dealer scan tool - it then proceeds to block several modules in the car.

It is mostly about either disabling the component protection or/and pairing the MIB 2 device with the car VIN.

So... I went to see out of curiosity what was the price for the new infotainment system on the Facelift models (with the large screen) and it is, in the configurator, brace yourselves...

3... Thousand... Euros.... 3000€ (!!!!)

Seriously? I mean, if you are buying a 200k car, maybe you can put some extra money on the factory stereo upgrade, but 3k extra for an infotainment system on a Skoda Octavia?? They must be nuts... :):) Nope-- I think aftermarket sounds great to me. A MIB2 should cost 2k€, excluding all the installation work and and the hacking to make it work on the car.

Yeah! I was looking and was shocked! MIB I for MIB II seem like better deal! But later when the price drops a lot!

Your friend who has one on the shelf? When he plugs it into a car which it's not coded to, it'll activate the Component Protection and it then means it'll need fixing. I'm not sure if putting it back in the original car is any use, but I have a rather interesting brick MIB unit here on the shelf which I plugged into my desktop power supply with a can gateway added to check diagnostics. It's no use now...

Yes, we don't intend to just plug and see what happens - some questions from some people in the know will be asked first :)

I checked what about the cost of a MIB2 Columbus retrofit from a 3rd party company and they said ˜€1350, but it also seems they need physical access to the car (coding needed on both the unit and the car), so... A Pioneer Navgate Evo costs around €1100 and it will have the same or better functionality (e.g. Sound) so, that is probably the route to go. Still waiting to see real life performance of the Pioneer and Alpine units, with the Alpine costing substantially more than the Pioneer, but also having a larger screen and better sound.

I'd be interested if your friend was willing to maybe post some videos and/or his opinions on here of the Alpine unit once he's had it for a while :)

I will, but it'll take (still) some time before I have the time to install it.

So much to do before head unit install:

Speaker cables to the doors, the speakers to the doors, Subwoofer casing, Amplifier installation and my soundproofing is not finished yet either.

Still missing something:

But already started:

Having seen Petunet's build live, I have to say it is impressive and not anything for the faint of heart - impressive to watch :)

...you should make a video. I think photos don't do justice to the scale of the thing.

ok so can you document the battery connection, door panel removal, where you came through the firewall etc.?

are you going 0 gauge or 4 awg? i'm at the same stage as you, i've got most of the components together just need to figure out where to mount and wire everything.
