Intermittent Massive judder after DSG DMF change

Featured Replies

Had my failing DMF replaced on my 09 VRS TDI DSG a few days ago (78k).

Driven about 30 miles so far.

In the main it's solved all the problems that existed prior to the work. Now nice and smooth and the noise at idle and the feeling of inappropriate inertia on slowing to a stop have all disappeared.

Despite this I seem to have a new problem:

Twice now I have had a few seconds of really noticeable, fairly excessive "juddering" of the whole car whilst driving. The first time was on flat road whilst accelerating in second at about 25mph. The second was in first/second accelerating from about 10mph uphill.

It felt like the same sort of sensation you get when driving fast over the mini speed bumps in 40mph zones, for example; as if there was something in the road (there isn't) causing the whole car to shake briefly for a few seconds. Like if you mess up a gearchange in a manual and engage an inappropriate gear and let the clutch pedal up too quickly it'll kangaroo down the road.

It very odd and clearly cannot be a coincidence that only 2 days/25 miles ago major work was done removing the gearbox and replacing the DMF. Never had anything like this before, and as I mentioned, all the DMF-related symptoms have resolved.

Will be phoning the dealer tomorrow but not sure what might be going on and if I should insist on not driving it any further unless something is catastrophically wrong?!

Any thoughts welcomed!

You mention dealer????????????????????????????

And whoever they are, did they replace with new bolts also?

Had roughly similar when I first bought my car secondhand about 18 months ago.

Car had had new clutch and gearbox fairly recently fitted.

It turned out the gearbox mount hadn't been secured correctly, so the gearbox was having a good old move about on its own especially when I accelerated

Thanks for the replies. Car is back with dealer awaiting being investigated tomorrow. I'm afraid it'll probably be one of those intermittent faults that they will not be able diagnose, bearing in mind it drives fine otherwise and I'd be surprised if it's thrown any fault codes.

Pretty sure they replaced the bolts as they are listed in the parts on the invoice.

However, seems worth getting looked at now just in case something major happens later on down the line.

Well fault code thrown up (no warning lights on dash) indicated a faulty glow plug. Code was wiped but then came back after test drive.

I can't for the life of me see how this could be the origin of the judder, unless the glow plugs have another function in the CR engine I'm not aware of!

Anyways, they've replaced it at a discount given the recent work I've had done (the part is surprisingly expensive). Time will tell!

Unfortunately glow plug fault codes are fairly common, even with brand new glow plugs fitted so it is highly unlikely it is related.

A juddering at low speeds with high load (as in both the examples you provided) indicate a worn DMF.

Given it is brand new would suggest something is definitely not right.

Also don't forget you are due a gear oil and filter change very soon (due at 80k).

Depending on the condition of the oil in there now (and hopefully you having had it done at 40k miles) could potentially be causing some slip in the clutch pack.

Glow plugs have no function beyond starting a (very) cold engine as far as I know. The garage should not even have suggested that as a possible cause of your judder on a warm/hot engine car, let alone charged you for the work - Yes, if you had a problem starting the engine due to a failed glow plug, then fair enough.

I'd say they didn't do a great job at replacing the clutch. Probably let a junior mechanic do the grunt work whilst the major techs were hunched over a laptop trying to sort out a trivial parking sensor problem on another car....

Or worse - Clutch packs

Hope you get it sorted and that the remedy is not too expensive.

All those relate to the 7 speed DSG though. The 6 speed is used in the vRS.

A fault with the engine could cause a judder but unlikely that a glow- plug would cause such a shudder.

And I wouldn't rule out the DMF... they may have put a new one in but it's not impossible for a new part to fail.

Bottom line though you took the car in, they've done some work and now it's juddering so they need to try and find the fault.

All those relate to the 7 speed DSG though. The 6 speed is used in the vRS.

Doh! Of course! M.U.S.T. R.E.A.D. P.O.S.T. S.L.O.W.E.R. B.E.F.O.R.E. R.E.P.L.Y.I.N.G.

It's definitely not right and not the glow plugs......nearly all Octavia's over 5 years old will have a glow plug fault stored!

I replaced the DMF in my Octavia about 18 months ago, and since then there is sometimes a slight vibration felt from the engine. It is worse when the ambient temperature is cold and largely disappears when the engine is hot.

I think it is a bad engine mount...probably on it's way out before the DMF was replaced but I wonder if the process or being removed and refitted, engine being jacked up and down to get access etc when the gearbox came out for DMF replacement pushed one of them over the edge!

I wonder if this could be the case in your car.....being a vRS with more BHP than my PD140, the symptoms of a bad engine mount are going to be worse....much like you describe.

Thanks for the replies.

Interestingly I've now down another 200 miles of mixed driving and and the fault hasn't reappeared. Everything seems spot on at present.

Of note, having done a bit of extra research it seems the glow plugs on the CR TDI are not just for cold start and have a continued function when the car is in motion.

Found a few forum posts (not Skoda related though) of judder at low revs in motion on other modern diesel engines apparently being solved by glow plug replacement.

Could be complete red herrings, but you never know.

Will repost here if the problem comes back.

  • 2 weeks later...

You could try the EGR . Read my post . I had one that didn't bring up fault codes but would intermittently stick.

Thanks for the tip.

Now driven another 700 miles or so and it's run beautifully so far.
