Occasional loss of power

Featured Replies

Hi,

I got a diesel VRS on a 64 plate. I'm currently experiencing what feels like an occasional loss of power when I lift my foot off the accelerator. OK, that's sounds stupid!!

Most of my driving is to and from work on the M25 - so usually cruising back and forth at 60-70mph - occasionally when I lift my foot of the accelerator it feels like I lose power for a split second before it kicks in again.

Driving me mad - anyone have any ideas??

Cheers

Mine does this very occasionally i thought it may have somthing to do with the throttle responce in normal mode. It's like a delay before it picks up. Its not turbo lag eather. Its like there is no throttle input for a split second.

Alpha - exactly what mine does - but more often than 'very occassionally'!

Has it had the emissions software update?

sounds similar ... sometimes it's a rocket, sometimes when I cruise and feel like someone pulls it back for a second and releases it.

how can I find if I have this update (is it better or worse w/ it?)

I thought I was mad but at around 30-35 mph I sometimes get the feeling that the accelerator is being "dabbed" on and off if that makes sense! I'll be holding a steady throttle and then it sort of rocks a bit back and forwards like I've come off the power and straight back on it, even though I haven't. Doesn't do it all that often but drives me mad ????

same symptoms here... I thought it's the fuel quality, planning to monitor the machine for longer period, but saw this thread and decided to commit my experience.

Any ideas what it can be.

Mine is 2.0 TDI 150 hp.

I've heard the passive regenerations that happened transparently do limit the throttle but can't really prove it.

I've no idea what the cause could be but same as you, I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes. If it's still driving me mad in a month or so I'll let the dealer have a look at it.

Cheers

I am of the opinion its a software thing due to the preprogrammed throttle responce. I dont think it has any thing to do with regens im basing this on when i come to a halt engine rpm is normal.

It sounds like the flywheel protection program which cuts power slightly to prevent back lash from the torque reduction damaging the flywheel.

The program is present on both the vrs 184, 150 and possibly other EU6 Diesel engines.

It's written in the ecu software and produces a strange phenomenon when it occurs.

Strange part is that you can feel it in town when cruising w/o much efforts around 40-50km/h.No push, no hard accelerations or deceleration.

Holding very gently the throttle pedal pushed. Out of a sudden ECU lowers the power (like you lifted your leg up for half a second) and then you have to push it little bit more to gain the same level of movement.

I see this when the operating temperature is at normal level, warmed car.

my 1.6 diesel have the same symptoms and the answer from the garage after test drive and so on was that it is a software problem and it wont be fixed until they have an update..and that could take time.

nothing to worrie about they say.

Wow - so many responses from people experiencing the same issue - its kinda reassuring its not just my Octavia, puts my mind slightly at rest.

Cheers, for all your replies - much appreciated!!

Good to hear we have common sense for this...

If anyone gets updated please share some details so we can push our dealers as well.

My '99 Subaru Impreza Turbo had what sounds like a very similar quirk. After maintaining a constant throttle or when lifting gently within 2nd gear, if the accelerator was floored there would be virtually no power for some seconds. It felt like only half or quarter-boost was applied. This was a common trait to all 99 and 00 Impreza's and found to be deliberate programing to meet emissions and fuel economy targets. It was flipping annoying.

I would guess that you are suffering from a VAG imposed "trait", conceived to either reduce emissions or increase fuel economy at or around the extra-urban speed band. The car is probably running extremely-lean and off-boost, and takes time to readjust to a heavy throttle prod.

I get the same thing, always at 1500rpm....

@ chuffer, be interesting to see if you notice it's always at the same rpm too?
