Wheel swap anyone?

Featured Replies

I'm considering swapping my Passat for a Superb. When I was originally looking to change my car last year there were hardly any Superb IIIs about so I settled on the similar Passat instead. Only problem was the Passat only comes with diesel engines in the UK and I really wanted to stay with petrol.

Fast forward a year and I'm not very happy with the engine, especially in the way it doesn't get the best from the DSG box. There are now quite a few nearly new petrol Superb IIIs around, so I set about looking to swap. I've found a car which I think will suit me, it's an SE-L Exec, but has the DCC option fitted which I was particularly looking for as I find the ride in the Passat on standard suspension a bit crashy. However, as there's always a problem somewhere, the car also has an option fitted that I don't want: 19" wheels, specifically, Sirius. I was hoping I could get the dealer to swap them with some 18" Pegasus that they had on another used car, but they're not playing ball. I really need to get a better ride out of my next car and I don't think 19" wheels (over the 18" I have on my Passat) is going to help. Probably the opposite, even with the DCC set to comfort.

Buying a new set of 18" from Skoda would be thick end of £1000, so I don't really want to go there, then I started to wonder about the possibility of a swap with a fellow Superb owner who fancied a free wheel upgrade. Anyone up for it?

Interesting idea, but I think people would want to know (and possibly see) the condition of the Sirius wheels before making a decision, but as long as they are good I'm sure someone would take you up on the offer.

Fair enough, of course. I've not actually seen them myself yet, as the dealer selling the car is over 200 miles away from me.

If you come to Denmark, I´ll gladly give you my 16" Orions whit brand new tires on if I can have your Sirius :D

I've got 19" Phoenix alloys on my L & K.  I expected quite a harsh ride but it's fine. Why not try the car with the 19's and then make a call on them?

I'll have no choice initially as it will certainly be on those for the journey back from the dealer. That's 200-odd miles so it should give me a fair idea of what they're like.

Bit of a tangent, but is there anyone here who knows if the brakes on a 220 TSI are the same size as those on a 190 TDI? I have some 16" winter wheels/tyres that fit fine on my Passat (the 190 TDI) so I'm hoping they will also be OK on this.

I'm afraid not http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/365644-winter-wheel-brake-sizes/

Thanks for the offer.

I do actually want to swap them for 18" wheels or I'd be on the ferry like a shot ;)

Reply sent (I think)

A brand new 18" Pegasus from Skoda through a main dealer cost me just £186 fitted. So 4 for £744.

I went for part number 3V0 071498H HA7 which is identical to the factory fit wheel but much much cheaper. Buying a set of 4 should attract a discount. They all told me they were on back on but took just a few days to arrive.

The factory fit wheels, although identical, were priced at £382 each!!.

I looked at replacing my wheels and if you use the parts section yes it is silly money. Ask the parts man to look at the accessories section as my wheels went fro £350 to £180 each. Worth a try. I know my car is an S11 but the S111 wheels do not know that.

Thanks for that, but I'm not really looking to spend anymore to get out of what was a £600 option on the car when it was new. I was surprised the dealer wouldn't agree to swap them and in theory increase the value of one of their other cars. Maybe that demonstrates that the theory is rubbish and in fact they would not add any value.

Dealer probably doesn't want to fit / swap because it's altering the original specification they are selling.

Plus on Skoda's system it would still show as being on 19s when it's not.

That's exactly the reason they gave. I don't see how it would make such a big difference though. It's not like I was after an engine swap.

I suspect that if it comes back into the dealer network at any point and the selling dealer does a vehicle print ready to sell it will be different, which then throws up a number of questions of what else could have changed.

If you read a spec sheet and it says 19" wheels but the car has 18" wheels you (as the buyer) will think something is up.

I think on used cars they shouldn't always assume nothing will have changed if a car comes back to them. I could well buy this one and put some 18" wheels on it and then trade it back in a few years down the line.

A few years ago I bought a Passat CC from a main dealer and had them put what was then the equivalent of a Columbus unit in it and I took the factory fitted Bolero equivalent and sold it on eBay. When I traded that car in to another VW main dealer I mentioned what I had done and the trade-in value was increased a (little) bit, so they can cope with changes when they want to.

I don't really want the hassle of swapping the wheels myself, so when the saleswoman calls me tomorrow (it's her day off today) to seal the deal, I may lay it on the line with them. If they won't play ball, I'm in no rush so I'll pass on the car and keep looking.

Or just go for the 19´s. I tried a Superb Combi TDI 150 DSG this weekend with factory fitted sports suspension in 19" Phoenix wheels. It looked way better than my own Combi TSI 150 DSG with 16" Orion wheels, but the ride quality was identical on the trip I tried.

How are your smooth Danish roads though? Better than the crumbling, pot hole filled efforts we have here I bet.

I find the ride on 19s with DCC perfectly fine to be honest. Even my wife who normally finds something to pick holes in has no issues. Have you test driven one with DCC on 19s? Is there an L&K Demo near you?

There may be a diesel one somewhere. I've not really checked as I've been after a TSI car, but it's a good idea.
