Shock absorber setup

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am the proud owner of a 2007 Roomster 1.9TDI, currently with 220.000km on the clock. I bought this beauty over a year ago and have notice that the shocks are due for replacement.

Driving in Norway means many long, dark, empty, icy, roads. So a good vehicle responsiveness is essential.

On this forum I have been reading a lot of positive stories about using Bilstein shocks. I would like to have a more sporty ride, compared to what it is now. But hopefully without having to lowering the car all the way to the ground (due to necessary ground clearance). Any suggestions on a nice shock/spring combo? I currently use the standard wheels (195/65 R15)

Thanks!

Anthony

Hi "Kaas", Bilsteins are good but I think you will need some slightly (25mm) lowered springs to make the car look right.

I would say, coilovers are the way to go from the outset, you can then set the car how you would like it, and conditions.  :coffee:

He didn't ask about the looks, just about good shock absobers. I'm from Finland and I know why Anthony doesn't want his Roomster closer to the ground.

Those are not standard wheels.  The standard wheels are 175/70 R14, 185/65 R14, 185/55 R15 (M+S), 195/55 R15, 205/45 R16 or 205/40 R17 depending on the version.

Thanks for the replies,

Bilstein-shop.com indicates that the B4 should fit the Roomster. Does that mean that the B6 will not fit?

I am still a bit unsure about which springs to choose. I think that the car can easily be lowered 25mm. But if its just for looks, (and not performance) I'd like to stick to the current ground clearance. It might just save me my bumper :-) Any recommendations or size and brand?

@keystonedriving; you are right! I have the 195/55/R15

Hi "Kaas" . You will probably find, just putting new shocks on, will make a big difference if the ones that are on are shot.

It is a bit of a minefield looking for uprated shocks and springs. Maybe just putting the B4's on will be the way to go. In the end we have to decide ourselves, from all the info we collate. Only you know the conditions you drive in, and what you want the car to do. :coffee:
