Standard HU and DAB HU.....

Featured Replies

Quick question....

I've noticed that the radio reception in the Mrs' new car isn't the greatest with the FM radio dropping right out in various areas around Sheffield. I've checked with the hidden menu and the signal strength bar does drop right down to either nothing or next to nothing.

Now yesterday I had an Up! as a courtesy car while mine was being serviced and I thought I would compare driving in the same areas that the Citigo is having problems with the radio. The radio in the Up! never dropped out but did still show a drop in signal strength but only down to around 25% compared to next to nothing in the Citigo but the radio in the Up! was the DAB version.

So what I wanted to know is this.... Is the DAB HU that can be fitted as an option an all round better performer than the standard FM HU or do they both usually perform similarly when using FM? I'm just trying to work out whether it's our car that has a faulty radio / aerial or whether it's just that it's naff when compared to the DAB unit?

Most likely that your aerial base amplifier is defective, a common occurrence on these cars.

I was thinking that but thought it had been sorted out on new cars last year? Although it could still be a single faulty unit rather than the older common issue?  -  ***EDIT*** I've just realised it was the clutch click that they reckon they have sorted on new cars not the aerial base issues.....

The other thing I've thought of is that the AM radio seems fine and doesn't drop out too much at all.... it's just various FM stations..... Would that point towards it not being the aerial amp issue?

I've had this on my Yeti and my wife's Mii, same part in both.

I'll get it booked in to be looked at..... Will be pointing out i've been able to compare it with an Up! that had no issues at all at the same locations etc.....

In which areas of Sheffield did you experience poor reception? My son has just started at Sheffield University so we have made a few recent trips passing through Grenoside, Hillsborough and Fulwood Road areas and FM reception on Radio 2 seemed OK.

We do have the old style full size whip aerial though, presumably some scrote nicked the original shorty aerial whilst the car was on the dealer's forecourt in Warrington.

Around Chapeltown / Ecclesfield and also Meadowhall.

Interested to know the result of this as the reception in the lad's Citigo is abysmal on FM.

Real shame is that I recently binned a perfectly good standard Yeti aerial  as I'd replaced it with the DAB version. It would have been simple to swap them over :-(

A little update on this one........

I was driving the car the other day for the first time in a while and noticed the radio reception was appalling and definitely worse than when we first got the car. I got to work and before I went in I went to get something out of the boot and for some reason I cannot explain thought I'd just check the aerial...... Lo and behold it was looser than it should be and I managed to tighten it by a good turn or so!!!!! On the journey back home after work the radio seemed fine all the way and as good as the VW Up! Courtesy cars I've had with the same radio and just the odd dodgy bit of reception in known areas.

So I'm going to keep an eye on it but it's quite possible that it could just have been the aerial that wasn't fully tightened up and had been like that since delivery and maybe getting slightly looser over the past three months.

If it's just a fluke I'll raise it as a warranty issue at a later date.
