Brake squeal

Featured Replies

It seems to be coming from NSF.

I first tried replacing pads then today I replaced Discs plus new Pads and yet she still squeals.

What else could be the cause of the squeal? Could the calliper piston be causing the squealing?

Thanks

Test drive the car and gently apply the handbrake keeping the button depressed.

Does it squeal?

If so you just did a load of work for nothing!

If not then it's probably just the front caliper(s) needing a good clean and reassembled using a little copper grease on the parts of the pads that make contact/slide on the caliper. NOT on the friction side which contacts the disc.

Replacing brake pads is a little more than a straight swap with the old ones.

There is a product you can paint on to hot brake pads which is absorbed into the friction material to alleviate squeal on problem pad/disc combinations.

I have already tried copper grease on the previous pad replacement and it made no difference.

Brake pad slides on caliper carrier need to be cleaned up, dressed  and greased with ceratec grease. A little on back of pads too. Stick on Shims onto back of pads may help alleviate if you've tried all else.

What do you mean by the slides?

The disc isn't rubbing against the guard is it?

If you have already changed the pads with new ones, then you would have had to push the piston back into the housing a little.

The calliper slides (in opposite direction) on the slide pins. Did the piston push back reasonably easily / smoothly?

If you removed the carrier (using spanner / wrench) rather than the whole calliper (using 7mm Allen key) then to clean the pins you need to remove the rubber seals / bungs at the back of the calliper and undo & remove the slide pins using the Allen key, to clean and re-grease them.

The pistons went back ok.

I did have the carrier and caliper off. I'll have a god at cleaning up and lubing those pins. Thanks

Turns out after doing the handbrake test it's the rear brakes.

Silly Willy :-)

Rear disc guards are notorious for contacting the discs. Try looking for shiny material around the gaurd where the lip of the disc is.

Mine rusted around the bolts (they all do this eventually) and I ended up removing them completely as they are about £25+vat a side iirc.
