Numberplate light and left rear light not working

Featured Replies

Dear all,

We have a Octavia 2001 mk1, 1,8T 4x4, with 345000 km made at this time.

Today, we experience a very peculiar problem: the left rear light AND both numberplate lights are not working. When swithing the rear light bulb, nothing happens. And when I measure voltage on the lamp, there is nothing.

I have measured on ALL fuses (including the lagre ones on top of the battery), but all are ok.

It is strange that there is no fuse for "rear light".

I am aware of the possible cable brake on the tailgate after this many kilometers, but this cannot explain why the left rear light does not get any voltage.

What can be the problem? Does anybody know?

Thanks in advance for tips!

Check the three multiplugs under the cd changer in the boot as that's where the join in the rear washer pipe is and can suffer from corrosion in the plugs which send power to the rear.

Thank you!

We have no CD changer, but I suppose the multiplugs are in the booth beside the spare wheel? Or?

Check the fuses again:-

Fuse 23, 5A, left hand rear tail light

Fuse 4, 5A, number plate lights

If the fuses are ok I would suspect the lighting switch. If so, pull out the above fuses and check with a multimeter that you have volts on one of the two fuse contacts. No volts, suspect faulty switch.

An alternative way is to switch on the left hand parking light (leave left indicator on with ignition key removed) as this is supplied directly from the lighting switch before the fuses. Parking light may not be fitted on non UK cars.
