What makes a good shock absorber / coilover?

Featured Replies

My question is pretty straight forward, why are the top brand of coilovers so good and the cheap ones so rubbish? Obviously most of you will say because of money, but why are they so different.

What makes coilovers bouncy? Which is the component that causes them to bounce excessively? Is it the spring or the damper?

I don't think all cheap coilovers are bad, on my last fabia I had some TaTechnics on there, around £200 and they were fantastic, really firm (which I loved) and not bouncy at all.

I've recently tried some Joms, and they're not that firm and are truly hilarious as to how bouncy they are, I was laughing at how bad they are, just driving down a relatively flat road and I was starting to feel sick..... so so bad.

APs everyone loves and they are super nice to drive, the perfect mix.

So what causes the bouncyness, is it the spring, or the damper?

Surely some cheap coilover companies can replicate the same ride that the higher end brands do, but just using the cheaper materials.

My KW v1's just won't ever corrode and after a clean look good as new.

If you took say, a high end brand spring and put on a low end damper, what effect would this have, Or a low end spring on a high end damper?

Info please gentlemen :)

Being prepared to do the engineering and spend out on materials to get the right spring rate in a spring steel that will hold its rate, and sort out the right damper rates for the springs.

Note that this depends on the mass and and mass distribution of the car, so that even things that use the same platform like, say, Audi A3, Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia and VW Golf can't use the same springs and dampers (BTW you probably need different rear springs and dampers for a Golf estate from a hatch uses).
