Helitape instead of bumper protector?

Featured Replies

With the acquisition of a puppy and a dog cage I'm looking at protecting the bumper on my VRS estate.

I've had a look at the fixed protectors on eBay and superskoda that retail for around the £50-60 mark, however they don't seem to full cover the paintwork.

Has anyone got one fitted, what's the quality like and importantly does it give a good protective coverage?

I'm thinking of getting a large strip of helitape instead, never used it before but it sounds like it could do a decent job at a fraction of the cost, any thoughts?

Helitape is probably what the clear protectors are made from anyway.

Used it before on dive computer faces and it is very good, I would however use soapy water to apply it otherwise you will see all the imperfections (air bubbles etc) created  when applying it.

The Rearguards one covers the entire horizontal surface and comes just over the lip too. I have one and it is very good. Looks OEM too.

Or just get yourself a big piece of 3M paint protection film off Ebay. Clear or carbon effect.

I have had a couple of instances where fixed ones actually damaged the paintwork on a couple of machines (round the edges etc.) defeats the object a bit. Had an RGM one warp and badly scuff the bottom of the tailgate on one of our other machines. They sent a replacement and that did the same too.

Helitape has become a bit of a generic name and like anything there is good stuff and bad stuff and you generally get what you pay for. Unfortunately the best ones like 3m 8641,are self-coloured (OK on black or white cars!) and probably not that cost effective if you actually have to buy a roll.

The thinner transparent stuff (like 3m 8671) is fine for scratches but not going to stop anything too hard and you will need to replace it fairly often if it gets a bit of abuse. This is the kind of thing the ones on ebay are made from.

Tape is what I use and just replace it when needed.

I've got two very bouncy Dalmatians who are now in and out of my newish 230 estate most days.  Rather than putting something on the exterior of the rear bumper I decided to invest in one of these, complete with the tailgate cover option.

Make sure you pick the right version for your boot (raised floor or not).  They're a bit on the pricy side but very well made and a perfect fit.  I can supply some pictures of mine in action if you like(?)

+1 for the rear guards protector, I've just fitted one to my newly acquired VRS estate and it does look OEM, also had one on my old Mercedes for years without any trouble.

cheers

The bumper protectors are extraordinarily expensive. I've had one on my current Skoda for 6 years. But at £60 or so ,seems plain profligate. Yes, I know a repaint would cost more. I've got clear Gorilla parcel tape - would that be ok pro tem or would the adhesive tend to harden?

We never noticed the rubbing damage caused to the bumper underneath until the protector was removed. If you are fitting one of the hard RGM rearguards one just be careful where it touches the bumper underneath.

Ten quid a year? Profligate?

Not really after something like this, the dog will be in his cage in the boot, he's only a Cavachon so he'll be getting handled in and out of the boot, the protector is for the way in which I have to lift the cage up and rest it on the lip of the boot - can definitely see the wife taking a chunk out of the paintwork, she's bad enough getting the shopping out!

+1  (both VRS & E-Class estate)

Just fitted a rearguard from Richard Grant Mouldings. Looks great and very OEM. The instructions look daunting at first, I'm getting old, but it slipped into place easily and the release tape pulled out fine.

Be careful of clicking above the  links though, you may end up sending an early Xmas present to someone. As I almost did. :notme:  Thanks for sorting that RGM.

got email back, all they said was " as long as it is within the year the item describes then it will fit.

So I ordered carbon look one, mine has a gloss black lower bumper part, and wanted the gloss of the carbon to match.

will put a pic up once done.

also got some tint for rear passenger windows and a carbon fiber boot door lip (?)

and other bits..

Nothing to do with me!

Just to clarify - I clicked the link skodaphile posted in #12, that took me to the Rearguards main site, then I just searched on that for Superb estates, then I pasted their weblinks.

The carbon definitely compliments the green! I'm still doing a bit of research; it's payday next week so hopefully I'll have an idea as to which to purchase!

Carbon Look RBP709 for Superb Estate MK2 FL 2013>

Car super dirty, awaiting wash bits and then will do a big clean and wax for winter protection.

So only cleaned area of installation with soapy water, sponge, dried it with paper towel. Then peel of double sided backing and stick.

Sticks very well, tape is flexible and can be removed and re positioned if needed.

after rearguard
