Once both fuses are replaced, open bonnet and switch on A/C at the end of a 15-minute drive so there's some warmth in the bay and radiator, but no passive/airflow cooling. Both fans should spin up at low speed after a short time (If you have VCDS, watch G65 refrigerant pressure in the HVAC module measuring blocks. Fans should start when 9 bar is exceeded). If nothing happens at 9 bar, hope to see both fans come on at high speed when 16 bar is reached. If nothing happens fan-wise even then, you should find the A/C has switched itself off at this point, or shortly after, I think.

There are (at least) two variants of the smaller fan; I think earlier ones were twin speed, later single speed. Giveaway is number of wires coming out of the motor; 3 for twin speed, 2 for single. Can't remember how easy or hard this is to see in situ.

On my car, low speed had failed on the main fan, and the small (single speed) one was running badly/slowly on 2 out 4 brushes. On the missus's, just the low sped on the main fan was dead, single speed small fan still worked great.

Maybe start a fresh thread unless it all just works smoothly with new fuses.

Just experimented on the Polo, about 40 mins after a ten minute run. Took almost 45 seconds after A/C switch-on before the fans cut in. Cut out again after 15 seconds, back on again a couple of mins later.

I won't have time for a half decent run until the weekend. Work is about 15 minutes in the am and return leg is about 20 - 25 mins.

Thanks everyone. Had the car interrogated by a mate, and, once he'd cleared the massive list of error codes, it only comes up with steering angle sensor every time.

We're going to try the procedure for resetting it first, involving combinations of ignition on, brake pedal depressed, driving forward, turning it 30 degrees, hanging the washing out on Thursday, etc... When we get round to it, that is, as I've bought another one in the meantime!

Let you know what transpires.

Looks like your rad fan fuse (5) is blown?

If I grub around in the current flow diagrams and get the info for battery fuses 7-12 as well for each 'era' of Mk1 production, may I PM you with it and ask you to add it into the fuses and bulbs post?

Rad fan's blown (No 5) again   Any thoughts, Pete?

Edit; could it be down to the thermostat not working? I replaced that yesterday and did a coolant change. Blade fuse No 8 (the green 30A one) is fine.
