Yeti's economy penalty v's saloon/hatchback.

Featured Replies

I knew we'd loose a bit of economy going for the Yeti instead of the Octavia but I'm surprised by how much.

We have two Yeti 1.2TSi's and an Octavia 1.2TSi. The Octavia is a Mk2 so all vehicles share the same platform.

Around town things are not to far apart but get the speeds up and I'm seeing a good 10mpg difference.

Yesterday my wife followed me from the east coast to home (86 miles mostly A roads) in the Yeti, she's very light footed and the cars are DSG so change up points controlled by the car.

Octavia averaged 58mpg and the Yeti averaged 45mpg.

I'm not complaining just surprised how big an impact the small amount of extra weight and the poorer aerodynamics affect the Yeti.

There may also be a gearing difference in the 'box and/or in the final drive.

But yes, the penalty one pays for greater frontal area is aerodynamic drag.

How many miles have the cars done respectively?

Averages as told by the respective instrument clusters?

The yeti is a giant brick compared to the octavia. A stiff headwind will muller your mpg.

I drove our Yeti to and from our summer holiday destination with a socking great roof bag fitted. I was happily tootling along in the slipstream of a lorry with the maxidot showing about 50mpg. Pulled out to overtake and could feel the headwind hit the car. Economy halved almost instantly!

As others have found out, keeping below 60mph gives very good mpg. I have recently returned from a Southend-on-sea to Southport run and back. M25, M1, A5? over Stoke, M6,  M58 and saw on the maxidot 69.6 on the way up and 70.3 on the way back. So we will say a true high 60's. The traffic was very heavy and I was travelling at 50 to 60mph all the time.

[i actually did 645 miles including running around during my stay and put in 45.4L when I filled up, brim to brim.]

Yes but I find they are not far out and the errors on both vehicles pretty similar so the differential remains similar.

Looking at RapidPaul's avatar pic, it is easy to imagine that it is all down to aero.

Try another same journey-same day with a strong tailwind and see if the difference fades away?

Yes, agree, very good mpg around town and upto about 60mph

above that speed mpg falls drastically, so it must be due to having the aerodynamics of a house brick

Another thing to consider are the tyres. Do they have different tyres fitted?

My brother-in-law has a VW Passat. They both have 2 litre diesel engines not sure offhand if they are exactly the same engine but I know his does 15-20% better m.p.g. The big difference as far as I'm concerned is I can get in and out of my Yeti and I'll be damned if I can get into his Passat without his help. I just accept that my Yeti is never going to be a star when it comes to economy but it suits my needs

Isn't it really a question of how far down the list of your personal priority motoring requirements do you have to go, before you reach 'Economy'?

Yes it is, this thread was more to show potential buyers what to expect which may help determine how big an issue the economy hit can be.

She did well to get 45mpg!
