My Octavia has Projector headlights as standard but these are not the blue Xenon/HID bulbs, they just look like halogen. Would I still require a HID conversion kit to upgrade this or could I just put different bulbs in?

Do you have a headlight range adjustment dial near the light switch? If not, they are halogen projectors rather than xenons.

 

You could try a HID kit but I suggest you don't for two reasons:

- The BCM (body control module) in the MK2 FL Octavia can easily be damaged by HID kits, if this happens you'll need a new BCM fitting £100-£250

- It won't be road legal although will probably pass an MOT

 

Instead, try something like the Osram nightbreaker unlimited or Philips xtreme vision. Both should give slightly better light than ageing stock bulbs if your headlights are in good condition.

 

If you want a whiter, more xenon-like colour, try the Osram cool blue intense or Philips WhiteVision. Both have a blue tint to the bulb which should raise the colour temperature but reduce the overall light output.
