DSG - 1st to 2nd gear change

Featured Replies

hi, on my april 2014 1.4, TSI, SE DSG (bought two weeks ago from skoda dealer) i am having a bit of an annoyance if someone can help. in Traffic or when pulling out of junction car shifts from 1st to 2nd gear at around 4-5 miles per hour speed (even has as low as 3 mph). this makes it a bit tricky when getting out of junctions in particular. once in 2nd gear and past 8-9mph i can put my foot down and it responds.

This is my first automatic and so not sure if this is ok. i guess the gearbox is quite clever and can work this out whats best and i also know there is an option for manual/sport shift but wanted to ask is this normal to change to 2nd at such low speed. this happens in drive mode as well as eco mode.

This is perfectly normal as, when the gearbox is in the D range, it will try to change up relatively quickly for economy. This is less of a problem with a diesel due to the fat chunk of low-down torque, but may be a greater issue with the petrol. Either put your foot down further when pulling out of the junction or just knock the lever back to engage the S range, which will delay up changes. You can always nudge it back the the D range when rolling.

I never found this a problem - I'd been driving my 1.4 DSG for a few days before I noticed the very low gear change. Didn't have issues with a low speed take-off at junctions, and I was trading down from a car with 220 bhp (Saab 9-5, auto) and bags of torque.

I felt first gear was ridiculously low, but since it was an automatic gearbox it didn't leave me scrabbling to change gear just after standstill, and was therefore irrelevant.

Just drive it and stop over thinking it, if you need to pull out faster, floor it, it'll respond

Thanks. I will see if I can get used to it. At least it seems it's ot abnormal.

You might find that over time the car adapts to how you drive and adjusts itself to suit your needs.

The only thing my RS is suffering from is a gawd almighty snatch/jolt at certain times between 1st & 2nd.

So does mine, almost like when in a manual, your foot slips of the clutch pedal.

Wet 6 speed box is a little less refined at times but, it does handle more power
