Smoke in the cockpit

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I found a very strange problem with my Superb, whenever it is started from cold and outside temperature is below approx 16C, I can smell diesel fumes, to the point that I have to open all windows to ventilate, alternative is not to forget to switch off the climate control before start. I also found that it is bad when descending downhill prolonged( like in the alps).

Two garages looked at it and can't find the issue.

2011 Superb Greenline II 1.6 TDI 35k miles, serviced at Skoda all the time.

Any advice is welcome.

Take it to a dealer asap

The problem is that 1 franchise dealer couldn't find a problem, another independent garage couldn't find the problem.

The problem only exists on a cold day, when you first start the car. As soon as you drive away its all clear, and if stop start the engine the smell of exhaust smoke doesn't re-appear.

It is too serious a problem to ignore even if it disappears.  You need to keep trying until the problem can be replicated with some dealer.  Even leave it overnight at a dealer so it can be tested on a cold start.  Unfortunately this is something that will have to persevere with as the risks are too high.  Hope you can get this sorted soon!

One possibility is that one of the outlet vents hidden behind the back bumper is stuck open, allowing exhaust fumes to get into the car. If this is the problem at least it's not something seriously wrong with the car, but you're still breathing exhaust fumes, so get it looked at immediately.

I would try nipping it up a bit more

I would try nipping it up a bit more

Thats my next step I think, once the engine cools down.

The first winter I had with my superb there were two occasions where it made a blowing sound on startup for about 5 seconds and I think that bracket was the culprit but it hasn't done it since so I never bothered with it but I don't thinks its bad to get to. Something tells me you will need a large torx bit but can't be sure

Tightened the bolt as far as it goes, still leaking fumes, looks like its been leaking for a while and covered with carbon, no longer makes proper seal. Have to find a garage to fix it, anyone knows a good garage in Winchester/Southamton?

have you tried undoing the clamp completely and readjusting or wiggling it before re-tighteneing, you might get it to seat better in a different position?

Check if there's any kind of seal or gasket on that joint too. If the seal between the mating surfaces is compromised no amount of tightening on the clamp is going to solve the problem.

Got it fixed with a £14 gasket and a new clamp, all in £100 - for 2 hours labour and parts. The gasket between the turbo and Partical Filter.

Previously quoted for new turbo, filter and other BS, its a struggle to find a good garage. BTW main dealer didn't even find the problem....

Glad to hear you finally got it sorted.  Shame you couldn't get a proper diagnosis from a dealer sooner.
