Diesel Cars not yet to be banned from entering the City as long as you pay extra.

Featured Replies

So carry on polluting as long as the Local Authorities and Government / Treasury get more money in.

Not really pollution reduction is it,

unless nobody is prepared to not pay to take diesel passenger vehicles into cities and highly polluted areas.

It is only one of those 'Could be' stories, as obviously £10 is just a figure picked out of the air, the polluted air.

& do they reall 'fear'?

The London Mayor seems to be talking about the charge on Pre Euro 4 Emission vehicles,

so UK registered before 2005.

..................

Looks like the build up to a Diesel Scrappage Scheme in the Autumn Statement / Pre Budget Announcement since George Osborne MP never got around to it last year as the VW Emissions Scandal had only just began to be exposed and the UK Government were not yet to be shown just how much they had been conspiring in letting manufacturers off with taking the pith. (Autumn statements pushed back so late now they are the Winter Statement.)

The Secretary of State for Transport last year at this time having been in the Government back when drivers were encouraged to buy diesels,

and now he has been Knighted & made Chairman of the Conservative & Unionist Party.

Sir Patrick McLoughlin MP.

It'll not bother me and I shan't be scrapping perfectly good cars...

makes me slightly mad actually that all this malarkey...   emissions requirements have driven the technology which has in turn led to the production of smaller and smaller particulates etc. and lo and behold the latter and NOX are now the bad boys...   it's a vicious circle.

The last scrappage scheme in 2009/2010 had those taking the £2,000 going in and buying Euro 5 Emssion vehicles that are the polluters, and some of these bought are already scrapped or near to their demise. Vauxhall, Suzuki, Kia / Hyundai and other seemingly very economic diesel engine small & not so small cars.

The VW Group did very well selling new Diesels with Defeat Devices to those that took the £2,000 and bought a VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi Diesel TDI's

The irony.

As someone with a 54 plate diesel, I think I might be in scope for this. I won't be scrapping it though. Perfectly good car IMO!

Will just pay if I have to go through London, but generally commute on highways.

This continual circle of emissions continues to rumble on doesn't it? Yet the car manufacturers continue to churn out diesel vehicles so obviously there is a demand for them?

For some reason I have been looking at Vauxhall Mokka`s and comparing prices. In some cases there is not much difference in price between a petrol and diesel vehicle to purchase nearly new. Now doing 10000 miles a year and 3 years motoring it would cost me nearly a £1000 more to run a petrol version. Why would I want to move away from diesel after 20 years.

I cant remember the last time I drove into London as I use the train, (fortunately I work for a TOC so get free travel) but you`d be made to drive into London out of choice. Obviously it is different case if you live there.

The problem with older vehicles is the majority aren't serviced properly and that increases their pollution contribution. The poster who has a 54 plate obviously cares about his car and maintains it to a good standard. Why should he scrap it?

He doesn't and shouldn't need to.  All he or anyone needs is a current MOT.

That is the thing really, ones not looked after or maintained still get MOT's including big smokey busses as many will see in cities that are not just London.

So a Diesel or Petrol poorly maintained and serviced and polluting but that passed a MOT can just enter cities with a Congestion & Pollution Charge paid.

Something still not working out there really if the UK Government are going to have to meet Emissions / Pollution targets.

Not just raise money to pay the Fines the UK Government will have to pay.

Anyway it looks today as though it might be a while longer than 30 months before the UK leaves the EU.

Isn't Oxford Street in London the most polluted and that already has private cars banned from it - it's purely buses and taxis only...???

Makes a bit of a mockery of it all??

If they really cared about keeping polluting vehicles out of the centre (and it really was about pollution and not making money) then they would operate a system similar to Germany's Umweltzone (Environment Zones).

You purchase a badge to display in your window. Very poor polluting cars aren't able to get a badge at all, then red, amber and green.

Cities then have dedicated zones where only Green, Amber, Red or all badges are allowed.

If you don't have a badge or have a red badge in a green zone for instance then you can be fined.

Then the people that need to travel into the city just have a one-off expense of 8 euros or so and you're keeping poor polluting cars out of the centre.

I think anything Euro 4 and higher gets a green at the moment.

Edit:

It's actually cheaper than when I last bought one. Now only 6 euros:

I do live there, but outside of any current congestion charging zones (thankfully).

Well, the body work is hardly something to be admired, but I keep the oil changed regularly and run it on premium :) (But yes, I am getting rather attached to the old girl).

Usual MO.

We won't ban something but we'll make it so onerous that we might as well have banned it.
