Most economical way to drive the big Girl?

Featured Replies

So after a couple of weeks of ownership I've finished fiddling with all the gadgets and have settled into steady ownership.

My car is the 150 DSG diesel. Having come from a 1.4T petrol Manual it's quite a difference.

I've noticed that the DSG appears to slow down quite substantially when off throttle in gear compared to the manual, which is taking some getting used too. I've noticed that if ECO mode is selected then the car will coast off throttle, which prolongs the need to apply throttle however it used a small amount of fuel to prevent stalling.

So my questions are:

How have people found this coasting mode? Do you use it? Does it help significantly?

Also, what is more efficient typically, moderate acceleration for a shorter period or slower acceleration for longer?

The later was more efficient in the manual however I'm not convinced this is the case in the Superb...

Thanks Chaps!

The car will not stall with DSG.

Ive had very good results with ECO but its a learning curve.

Good observation is a must. I'll not repeat everything here but have a search on the forums as it's been discussed at length.

A moderate acceleration is supposed to be more efficient than a slow one.

I use ECO mode in my works Octavia 90% of the time, I have achieved 70.1 MPG on one occasion, on average I get between 55 - 60 MPG, I slip it into sports mode on long down hill runs as it give good engine breaking. I also tend to use ECO mode on my Superb as well, both cars are 2.0 TDI's with DSG.

I bought a 280 to be a mustang not a show pony. Sport the way to go for me.

Phil will be using Eco mode soon just for a rest..... Pulling 4g of acceleration all the time never wears thin but it's a killer on the internal organs !

I'd believe 1G, but..........

Did you even know that you have an ECO mode?

ISTR that our little Golf has that option but we've not explored it just yet.

We drive it in individual mode, everything in "Normal" except Steering & Suspension in "Comfort" & the Soundaktor in "Eco".

(The car is noisy enough by itself.....)

SWMBO recons that we don't do enough miles to worry about fuel consumption,  but other older cars are more economical, 35 - 37 mpg compared to 33

in the R.  (Our annual fuel spend is approx. £2400, based on current fuel prices, so even a 50% reduction would only save us about £1200.)

AWD is very but useful, but it must add to the rolling resistance, + it's quite heavy for it's size.

As for the OP' s original post, we've never found that DSG's are expensive to run when compared with manuals, just much easier / fun to drive.

We've experienced diesel economy, 55ish mpg in a 1.6D / 5-speed manual rental Octavia last year & an unimpressive 36 mpg in a Volvo V70 back in 2004.

Yes, diesels are still cheaper to run but it could b better to buy a older / thirsty car rather than a brand-new econobox.

I ran a 3.0 V6 Mondeo for almost 6 years, averaging 27 - 30 mpg, but it only cost me £8400 to buy it when it was 2 years old, (it sold for £2K)

& you could buy a lot of fuel with money that wasn't spent on a new diesel with a similar specification.
