Mk1 Octavia S-Contact fault (no ignition live with key in)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've recently bought an Octy L&K TDi as a bit of a project.  Its the third one I've owned and I know my way around them fairly well but I've got an annoying fault with it that I don't seem to be able to rectify.

The old stereo seemed to work fine when I drove the car home so prior to putting the car on the road I fitted an Alpine DAB headunit with replacement aerial etc.  I went to fire the stereo up and it wouldn't switch on, which I found was down to the ISO connector in the dash having no ignition live feed.  Some more checks and I noticed that the S-Contact fuse (F37) was only 12V with the ignition switched on, it didn't stay live until the key was removed like it was supposed to.  Similarly, the doors didn't unlock and interior light didn't come on when the key was taken out.

I scanned the central convenience module with Vagcom and it threw the following fault:

00849 - S-contact at Ignition/Starter Switch (D)

             25-00 - Unknown Switch Condition

So today I replaced the ignition switch, hoping that the problem would be solved but unfortunately it wasn't.  The wiring around the switch seems good and now I'm a bit stumped.

Can anyone help with this?  I'm wondering if its some kind of CAN related problem.  People have mentioned the climatronic unit being faulty which has resolved the issue but mine is fine and removing it didn't make any difference.

I'm also confused as to why Fuse 37 is live with the ignition on but the stereo doesn't have ignition live?  Everything else ignition related seems to work ok as far as I can tell.

Thanks in advance

Tom

Fuse #37 was the "S" contact fuse until Oct 2001 after that it became #10 (10amp) & #37 became the engine control unit supply

That's interesting - is there another fuse that became the S-Contact fuse instead that I can test?

#10 is the S contact fuse for post Nov 2001

Apologies, I've just re-read your first reply and noticed that you'd already said that! I'll have a look into that. Thanks for your help so far.

Well, for some reason the number 10 fuse was missing from my car. Put one in and now I have an ignition live to the stereo and the rest of the S-contact functions work correctly including lights on and auto-unlock with the key out.

No idea why the fuse had been removed and there's no evidence of damaged wiring anywhere so it's a bit of a mystery but never mind, all working now!

Thanks for your help Nige.

Glad you've got it fixed
