Hybrid or LPG

Featured Replies

Ok guys, i need your help. Over the coming months, I wish to fit a quaife lsd, and have considerably more power.

Do I go for a hybrid turbocharger, fmic, injectors, uprated fuel pump, and a new map to match -

Or and LPG conversion, which will be cheaper but not enough seems to be known about it.

Tried and tested hybrid or experimental LPG?

Any more info about what the advantages/gains of running LPG in a diesel are? :D

Chris

Dumb question, what is LPG?

Chris

Im hoping someone from scotland will be long to enlighten us shortly. :D

But apparently, the lpg is fed in to the inlet manifold, along with air, to make the combustion process of the diesel fuel more efficient. 25% power increase has been suggested.

Liquid Petroleum Gas.

I didn't know you could run LPG on a diesel??

Edit: Dave's just replied.

So by skirting LPG into inlet manifold I assume it's using the explosive compression of diesel to ignite it. Sort of like skirting in NOS then I guess...perhaps...maybe.

IIRC it's injected in to give a better burn, there by producing more power. But I could have that totally wrong, it would not be the first time!

edit: what dave said

OK. I've heard that some grazy finns has done this, but to older cars. Anyone thinked of putting aqua mist? Should bring little extra jerk and put combustion temperatures down.

A hybrid doesn't fundamentally alter the engine itself so probably less risky.

I'm wondering as well what LPG would do to the temperatures etc, would it wear the engine parts out a lot quicker (like NOs does?).

As per one of my 'I'm gonna do this to my car' threads I'm also wondering about the LPG tank taking up room etc.

Keeping an eye out on this though as it sounds interesting :D

I like the idea of inlet manifold LPG injection, but I'm not convinced they'd give me 25% on top of 220bhp (thats 275hp! ) and I don't like the idea of a boot in the tank.

Therefore if and when I get the money I'm looking at better injectors, then it stops. :)

Does it ever really stop :D

I really think it's an either/or situation, not a combination of both upgrades. I thing 265 is the most Allards have got from a 130 pd.

I'd say hybrid turbo first, get the most from what you've got. A turbo should be around

Thank you for that mate, I have already emailed Allards. Chesterfield is closer though.

Don't forget to price in a clutch too!

We are now getting into the law of deminishing returns......

This is true. Im tempted to buy a smart for two, and pop a bike engine in, a la the current craze, and leave the Fabia as it is. I'm happy with it, but just left wanting a bit more.

Tank options vary from spare wheel d-type to boot mounted ' date=' I'm looking at getting one that'll fit where the old SMIC was but it'll be difficult.[/quote']

Do you mean put an LPG tank in the engine compartment?

How do you fill it without vapour pouring over the hot engine? What happens in a front end collision?

Sounds like a death trap to me.

Sal

The boot area of a car is by far the weakest part, most impacts are slow speed rear end ones and I for one don't want hard pipe running the length of the car. Up front it's outside the engine bay, behing the bumper bar and with the wheel for a side impact protection, they even fit sill tanks to cars.

If you have vapour coming out during a fill your in big **** regardless of location, the pipes run close to the turbo anyway guess what temp it gets too.

The onlything stopping me is the filler connector location as I can fit in a 22ltr working cylinder where the smic used to sit. At around 10ltr per tank of diesel that would be enough.

If it's just a track car there are lots of options for around

Tomcat? I assume by that you're referring to the 200 series Coupe of the mid-late 90s?

If you are' date=' then you're barking well up the wrong tree with the 1.8t. The turboed K series didn't arrive until about 2003.

The only Coupe Turbo was fitted with a 197bhp 2.0 T16 engine, which is far better than the weedy 160bhp 1.8t in almost every respect apart from it's heavy weight.

Although, of course, you could, given time and money fit a 1.8t K series in a 2xx Coupe, but it would cost you a hell of a lot more than 2K to do it.[/quote']

Tomcat was the 220bhp model out for a short time. (350 cars in the UK)

Another option would be a nissan 200 type.
