Head lift or gasket failing

Featured Replies

Evening everyone,

I was having a good blast around brands Hatch yesterday, but the day was finished earlier as my car started steaming!

It looks like the coolant had so much pressure, that it was forced out of the coolant cap.

Could that be a sign the head gasket is on its way out?

For normal driving it doesn't lose coolant or have the usual residue on the oil cap.

If it is caused by head lift, what options are there?

I have the pd150 head bolts fitted already to prevent head lift

Did you fit the PD150 bolts because you had already experienced head lift? it's definitely the head gasket anyway, so you'll need to replace the lot.

Ok thanks. No I fitted the pd150 head bolts at the same time as fitting the hybrid turbo, to prevent head lift with the expected power increase.

Would you recommend replacing anything else at the same time as the gasket?

The bolts, they'll have stretched, I'd have the head licked and replace the valve stem seals and freshly lap the valves in, but that's just me being thorough.

If you fancy a upgrade and want to ensure no head lifting problems in the future go for a stud and nut kit when you replace the gasket.

As above, get the head fully decoked and the valves reseated whilst it's off as it doesn't cost a lot.

Truth skim, new stem seals, full decoke and valves reseated costs me £100 at local engine builder :)

Thanks Kev. I'll have a look for some local engine builders :)
