VRS sometimes sluggish when cranking

Featured Replies

Hi all, brand new to the forum and just recently bought a MK1 Fabia VRS with 160k miles on the clock.

Has had a number of bits and bobs done to it, timing belt, clutch recently done, new turbo, apparently was sitting for a while due to juddering which the previous owner put down to 2 injectors which were replaced and has been running like new ever since.

Problem is after 2 weeks of ownership, every now and again, I go to turn the car over and it sometimes takes a good few cranks before the engine actually kicks in.....Battery has also been changed. I would have thought the injector Loom would have been changed when checking the juddering which apparently came from the injector themselves but not sure of this.

Is there any reason why it starts perfectly fine most of the time, and then when leaving work at around 8pm it takes a good 2 or 3 seconds to crank the engine to turn over. Should also mention that I always wait for the glowplug light to go out before turning the key over.

Cheers all

Anyone local who could scan it with VCDS may shed light on any loom injector problems if you don't have VCDS, I'm in Cornwall and would offer but not a option of a 200 mile down, there must be someone closer who could help ? does it crank at the same speed when it needs those extra 2/3 secs?

Hi mate, thanks for reply. Yes it does crank and the same speed. My cousin works for Mercedes down here in Wales so he does have his computer he can plug it into over the weekend if he has a few spare minutes. Its very strange - again it happened tonight where it needed a few more seconds of cranking before firing. The fuel pump primed as normal - I got it home turned it off and cranked it back over again with no hesitation. I left it around 2 hours so that the engine would completely cool down and went back out just now to fire it up, and again no hesitation. Its literally only once in a while it seems to have a stutter when starting. I feel like im going mad thinking I am being too anal if there is any slight noise or stutter with the car but I have seen a few other posts where people have said the same thing with a slow start.

I am wondering if it just happens that it is between a firing cycle when i switch the engine off, if when I then go to start it again maybe it just needs that extra crank to get the cylinders firing to turn the engine over? Strange one but may just that connected with the fact that the wiring loom MAY be on its way out.

glow plugs ?

glow plugs ?

I've had similar, and was convinced it was the glow plugs, but diagnostics showed they were fine.

New starter and battery just fitted, and it's whizzing over now, but today, it did start quickly enough, but it wasn't a clean start. Sort of stuttered for the first ftwo seconds.

Most odd.

Fine for the rest of the day like our friends up here^^^
