Scout Grumble from back end!

Featured Replies

I have a nearly 4 year old Scout with 50k miles. When going up hill at low revs (Its also DSG)  I've noticed a grumble from the back end. I'm guessing Halex or diff issue, or possibly propshaft. I had the Haldex oil changed at 40k at the main dealer. I hope they didn't drain the diff and top up the Haldex which I hear can happen. If I take it back to them and this is the case I bet they won't tell me the truth.

Anything I should check for leaks? What should I do next to get to the bottom of this one?

Back to the dealer who changed the oil.

Have a quick look under the car first to check for obvious leaks.

Is the Haldex still working?

Thanks silver I'll probably do that as its due for a service anyway. How would you check the haldex, floor it on gravel and see what happens?

Can't see any unit lasting 10,000 miles without oil

It usually becomes pretty apparent when the Haldex stops working, you tend to notice more wheel spin from the front wheels when pulling out of junctions etc. unless it hasn't been working for a while.

Take a drive in the county and find a wet grassy slope. A brisk lift of the clutch whilst leaning out the window watching the rear wheels should do it. Don't get stuck though  :D

gear oil it ain't

I have just put  my winter tyres/wheels on and there's a marked improvement, the  winters are a slightly smaller radius so lower geared perhaps that might explain the Improvement less strain on the drive chain. its not gone though just less noticeable.

Were the summer tyres wearing evenly?

The Scout gets easily upset if the fronts are significantly more worn that the rears or vice-versa.

Perhaps the winters are more evenly worn all round?

My Scout was quite good for wearing its tyres evenly so they were always replaced four at a time.

All tyres are pretty much the same wear Silver, although they are all down to about 3mm so will be up for a change soon. I'll ask the dealer to check it out when the service is done. Its also got a very slight coolant leak have to top it up very 500 miles or so, I'll get that looked at as well.
