DSG annoying Stop/Start

Featured Replies

Had the little annoying thing on both my VAG DSG with stop/start where the stop cuts in too eagerly, whilst still moving at about 3 or 4mph but tonight it caught me out big style.

Turned off a roundabout and had to almost stop to allow the oncoming car through the narrow gap and as I was still moving my over ambitious stop/start kicked in and shut the engine but on pressing the go pedal whilst still moving it refused to start......nothing but still rolling and it came up on the dash saying start manually!!!

Had to stop completely(now stuck in the way of oncoming cars) and had to put it into Park, then apply brake pedal and try and start it, which on first go it did nothing :( on the second turn of the key it started and was able to select D and move on whilst the cars around wondered what I was playing at... embarrassing.

You do not have to go to P do you it starts in N if the temperature is not very very low.

(Then Stop / Start would not be operating if it was as cold as it would not start in N.)

Best switch Stop Start off if that is how it behaves.

Never knew I could get away with staring in N if it does it again it could be worth a try,tbh it's the first time it has refused to start on pressing the throttle in nearly 7k miles but does always have that nasty habit of stopping the engine before the vehicle has stopped.

Think it must have confused itself.

I live in a semi rural area like you Ben, always found the stop/start a pain in the arse in my R Estate. My missus felt the same in her Polo GTI DSG. So we swithed it off , as we felt it more of a danger under certain circumstance ,rather than a benefit.

The annoying thing to me was the default setting was to stop/start. Should be the opposite ,I.e. Stop/start off ioo. Select it to come into use for the correct circumstances.

Someone will be wiped out one day by a system that should never even leave you embarrassed.

A person borrowing your 'new' car likely wouldn't have a clue what to do and simply freeze

CO2 takes precedence over safety apparently

I had a Polo SEL DSG as a courtesy car last year and although used to stop start, I felt really reluctant to use it on a DSG, you put in park or neutral? Never knew the answer. All seems too complicated to me.

If you wanted Stop / Start and the car was up to temp, charged battery, no A/C on, not too cold outside, drivers door not open etc you would leave it in 'D'.

Even VW are 'Simply Clever'....

The biggest concern with stop/start I have is that after 6,000 miles the off button is starting to go shiny. Give it a few more years it'll be worn through  :D

Loving it on a dirty diesel because no engine on when stopped makes sense, and coasting function is just wonderful, gear changes are seamless, and the DSG seems to be different these days as doing what is asked even if that is choosing too low a gear while changing down on the paddles.

Stop start on the TSi manual rapid can also get into this confused state where the mfd tells you to start manually. However dipping the clutch to the floor fires it back up.

In my Pug it does that
