Auto headlights

Featured Replies

Hello,

My Elegance Octy has a rain sensor and dimming interior mirror but not a headlight switch with the auto function like my colleage has on his VRS. (Another icon between O and the parking lights resembling the low beam icon pointing to a tunnel entrance)

Would it be enough for me to install a new switch to have auto headlights?

I do have a vcds cable if coding is necessary.

Yes.

The dimming mirror has nothing to do with the RLS and auto lights.

Thank you!

Again - any VCDS coding required?

Before I order a switch, could I easily just swap the switch for my colleague's for a short test? If yes - is it enough to cover the windscreen sensor to "pretend" it's dark?

Thank you!

Yes you will need VCDS for activating adaptations like Leaving home, Coming Home, ADL etc.

The topic you linked seems to be for FL only. Mine is a pre FL.

When we talk about light sensor - we mean the light sensor that the dimming mirror uses, right? There is one inside the cabin pointing backwards and another pointing forwards to check if its daylight or night time. Correct?

There is the rain/light sensor which is stuck to the windscreen. Then there are the two sensors for the dimming mirror, these are not connected in any way with the RLS.

The chances are you will have a wire missing between the light switch and CEM. Without this auto lights will not work. It's pretty easy to fit though. So you can't test it with your friends switch. You can check if you need the wire by looking to see if all 8 pins are present in the plug which goes into the back of the switch.

So it's 8 wires I need to count. The other post says there should be 10 - I guess that is for the FL version?

Yes, pre FL has 8. Easy enough to check, just count the slots in the plug. Check all 8 have connections in them. The non auto switch will have only 7 pins.

I have just checked - the plug seems to have 10 wires in total and the current switch only has 9 pins.

This should mean that if I try out my friend's switch or get myself one with auto - I should be having auto lights, right? :)

Should be the same as my old one then. Maybe it was 10 wires, not 8. Count the wires to be sure, but if they are all there then you will be able to try with your mates switch.

Nice. I have just ordered an OEM switch. :)

Would it be enough to cover the sensor for a quick test?

Yes.

All good. installed the new switch and cleared the errors via vcds. :)

Bottom line: If you have 10 wires in the harness then you can install a switch with auto.
