Coolant troubles

I got the cooling fans working...so that issue solved... car temp Ok on idle but under load the temp climbs up high.so still overheating... and blowers in car get hot and then go cold again they keep doing this..ive remembered as well when it overheated the first time it was blowing hit and then cold and I remember thinking something isn't rite...so we're do I go now??????

As you have already now changed the thermostat, and presumably with either a OEM item or a good quality pattern item (cheap ones have been proved to be faulty out of the box many times on here), then I would check your rad hoses first. They should feel solid when you squeeze them with the car cold rather than squeezing a soggy doughnut.

If you have one hose noticeably different in feel, it could be delaminating internally causing a reduced flow. This is really unlikely, but you should rule it out as it is the silly stuff we always check last can make us feel really depressed when we just pile in to the big jobs first.

If nothing obvious shows, then in view of your last comments on running hot and cold, then I would be looking to a failing water pump. Do you have any documents with the car that may show when it was changed last or a cambelt?.

Glad you got the fans going, what was it in the end?, as people may search this thread later on and it could help some other poor soul.

Hope it helps

Phil

Well it was the last thing I checked it was... the first green fuse under the bonnet on top of battery was blown changes it..but I didn't know the control module was there..but anyways all good now..I changed the fan switch first anyways coz that looked old and battered anyways...

Is the temp getting to 90 and staying there now?

It sits at 90 on idle but under load it rises dangerously high even when fan kicks in...gonna go for water pump and cambelt see if this cures it

Can you get the use of a hand held temperature gun to check the temp over the radiator at all to check for cold spots when the gauge is hot? - something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Handheld-Non-Contact-IR-Laser-Infrared-Digital-Temperature-Gun-Thermometer-/351901852905?hash=item51eefc24e9:g:BLIAAOSwHMJYJBtI

The link is not a recommendation, it was the first thing I found to show you what I meant. Even if it is not accurate, it is not that important as you are looking for changes in temperature over the surface of the radiator rather than how hot is getting as a whole. By that I mean if one corner is 90 degrees, and another is 30 degrees, then that may indicate a rad blockage.

I still feel it is the pump in my gut, but you could do that check with little outlay if you could borrow one for an hour or so.

Ile get hold of one and try it mate thanx...I was back working onit today and the bottom rad hose that runs from the thermostat felt cool not hot my front rad also felt quite cool not hot

Also intermittent hot air thew vents...Some times hot or warm then it will all of a sudden blow cold

Id be very wary driving it until the cambelt/pump is done, you could cook the engine.

Its not getting driven mate hasn't been driven since the problem

Hi Everyone,

Have you arrived at a resolution to your problem? If yes please let me know. I might be suffering from the same issue.
