Cam belt change

Featured Replies

My Octy is now five years old and done 88000+ .Skoda sent reminder that it should be done soon.Whats the opinion guys of leaving until done 90000?

If it was my car id replace it,changing the belt & tensioners etc every 5 years is a lot cheaper than having to pay for expensive engine repairs should the belt or tensioners etc fail.

Well the change interval seems to be a moving target based on manufacture date. 4/5 years and mileage variations.  But cutting through the detail - ask yourself is 2k miles going to make any difference? Unlikely and remote, unless of course is breaks at 89,999 and then you would be asking me why I said it would be all ok!! Seriously though, I  would be comfortable you can risk 2k miles but there is always a risk, even if it is extremely small.

Just for the record I had mine done at 140k not my choice but just was outta cash.

But also have it done at a Dealer. no need to go indy with fix priced work.

I had quotes from independents who were more expensive that a dealer !!

Oh and you get better warranty and that magic worthless stamp

Also keep in mind that a lot of dealer may have a price match policy. So get a written quote from a local independent and ask if the skoda dealer will match them on price.

Get it done now. I've blown an engine when the belt broke and that's very expensive to put right, and as TheClient said not worth risking it for 2K miles.

Change your auxiliary belt while you're at it too if it's not been done recently. For the sake of a few ££s the belt has to come off anyway when doing the cambelt. They've been known to snap and get caught up in the cambelt housing which then wrecks the engine.

Thanks for that guys, my local skoda quotes £385.

Not a bad price at all.

Does that include the water pump?

If I had water pump done as well I think it worked out about £420,way back in 2014 It had a leak and they said it was the pump so replaced that at £382!

Skoda Dealer £385 / £485 with water pump
