Serious braking and traction control problems

Featured Replies

Right, i changed my pads and discs about 3 weeks ago.. all good

I recently got the front tyres changed and was 'happy' but

On Saturday, I was going down the M6 and boom, dash completely died on me with all warning lights blaring.

My brakes feel like they're not gonna stop me in an emergency and I can hear and feel a clunk on lift off on the brakes

I pulled into a garage for a diagnostic and it popped up with

Wheel timing speed

Wheel impulses

Braking fault

Dash insert fault

Upon looking, the garage I had the tyres from had put odd tyres on (45 + 50 profile on the same axel)

After getting the tyre changed there is no significant change at all..

Traction control still kicks in and need to drive with it off,

More info on this.. I do have 55 profile tyres on the rear.. do I have a speed sensor on the rear wheels that then show the rears are spinning differently yo the fronts

In a nut shell.. I ain't shopping quick enough with the knock / clunking

Traction control kicks in all the time unless off

I do now have a set of wheels with all matching tyres yet to go on but am sceptical of this fixing the problem unless there is a speed sensor on the rears

Thanks in advance, to any help on this. Seriously stressing me out

There is an ABS/ wheel speed sensor looking at each of the four road wheels.

As Wino says. The result of having 3 different rolling radii on the road wheels is that the anti-lock and traction control read the wheel speeds as different, and that's what causes them to trigger.

This now makes perfect sense to me.

Cheers both

I'd be more concerned about "dash completely died on me with all warning lights blaring".

Do you mean the dash powered off and when it powered up it had many warning lights?

Whilst i was driving along, the cruise control disengaged

Rev guage and speedo dropped as though car wasn't running

Mileage wasn't going up

Pretty much all lights came - Steering/abs light/handbrake light/EML

Pulled over, turned it all off - started up again and worked for a few hours then happened again

Probably as a result of the car getting wildly odd readings from the ABS sensors.

The ABS sensors are all tied in with the steering and other sensors for ASR and ESP for the car to know what it's doing.

The speedometer and mileage driven is also driven by the values from these sensors.

After a while of readings it can't make sense of it will throw errors and turn off those systems reliant on those values.

Sure, CC will deactivate if wheel readings are wildly conflicting but it shouldn't kill the rev counter.

I suspect there is a wiring issue somewhere too, might be worth inspecting the wiring loom to the instrument cluster for damage if it happens again.

Ah, you may also have an issue with the alternator sense wires and/or the sprague clutch as well. I got all of those at once (and the ventilation and stereo turned themselves off too) when the clutch stuck open.

Update!

So I bought a set of 5 Steelies from a guy in COV, all with decent tyres, all 55 profile which in turn has now solved all problems!

I know it's not ideal at all to have different profiles on opposite axels but it was something I couldn't help temporarily.

Now that I have the same wheels all round, brakes are working, The clunking sound was evidently the ABS kicking in at low speeds and now the TC doesn't decide to kick in after 30mph

So, after xmas I will be buying a set of 4 completely matching tyres to go on my refurbed alloys, so I will have a set of 5 Steelies for sale.

Thanks to Wino though, as soon as he said there's a sensor watching all wheels, I knew my problem layed there

Once again, I love my car haha

CHEERS GUYS!
