Last stage product (LSP) issue

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

Having recently purchased the new Vertool Force Drive DA I decided to have a play yesterday.  What a great machine this is, if a tad noisey! (review to come in another post).

Having conducted a two step polish on black metallic paint the Vertool soon had it looking sweet with great clarity and reflection.  Then, an issue arose surrounding the LSPs.

Having a little experiment I used two polymer spray sealants, both from Sonax, and on looking at the finish with a LED torch they gave a starring effect away from the light source, as if the machining needed refining.

So, I tried a dab of Waxaddict Vitreo (lovely wax) and inspecting the paintwork this time the finish was perfect!

Any ideas?  Anyone come across this before?  The gloss with the sealants was great but put into bright light the clarity was less than acceptable.

All the best

David

What product from Sonax was it?

What temperature was it?

What cloth did you use for removal?

How long was it left on the paint?

Thanks,

Ben.

Temp, both outside and product.

Not shaken enough.

If it's cold and you have a bit of moisture in the air then this can effect the end result.

Of course it might just be that the LSP is more about gloss and durability than it is clarity.

Keeping with the theme - this time of year.....  so i always have my winter detail done well in advance.

Temperature and humidity can be a real pain on product curing and performance with synthetic/polymers etc..

Agree with all of the above. Unfortunately I've made that mistake my self before.

Temps at this time of year for applying LSP can be a real pain.

What product from Sonax was it?

Extreme protect and shine

Was given the other a day ago, can't recall the name-in very small aerosol and for commercial use.

What temperature was it?

Mild yesterday, under cover at about 10-12 degrees.

What cloth did you use for removal?

Standard MF cloth but no issue with removal.

How long was it left on the paint?

Couple of minutes tops.

Regards Ben

David

Fortunately I was only playing with a test panel at home and not working on a client's car.

Every problem has a solution I guess...I won't be able to work in a heated studio with every car so any suggestions would be great. Leave products longer to cure? Any products that seem to work better at lower/more humid temps?

Did you panel wipe before using either product?

I've not used the Sonax products but from experience of some other brands of spray sealant they contain solvents/carriers/evaporators which in effect act as a gentle panel wipe as the product disappears so do any polishing oils which were left on the surface.

Many waxes have a small masking effect so this may have temporarily hidden the true finish.

95% of the finish is in the prep :nerd:

Thanks Chris

Yep, panel wipe used before application of lsp. Paint was fine prior to application. Will be looking at this again!

Cheers
