Yellow oil light (not flashing) has just come on - checked and it is low... Octavia 1.9tdi

This subject has been done a thousand time I know..but what is a medium priced brand to use (isn't it all the same!!??) and what amount would you buy?? I'm guessing I'll need to use it again in the future so is it worth buying a 5L?

Make sure it meets the VW spec. If in doubt just buy the Quantum stuff from TPS.

So the brand does matter? I need to go to halfords ASAP but dont want to trust them with it!!

Id get quantum as it is castrol but rebranded.

Have a look on eBay you can buy quantum oil for £19 with free delivery

Re Ebay - sensible to purchase from an auto store.

 

ie Audi dealers, vag group, motorhomes etc.

 

If you buy 5L and only require a small amount, the rest could be used for your next oil change.

If you desperately need it, Hafords have Mobil 1 ESP, Castrol edge plus their own VW / Audi spec brand which is obviously made by some major petro chemical manufacturer but I don't know which manufacturer it is. As such, I would stick with the other 2 but any of the 3 (or more) approved oils they carry will be better than running low oil pressure.

 

Edit: Also as suggested, 5L is a lot more economical. If you can find a used 1l or 500ml container even from a bin at a service station they are useful for keeping in the car though if you fill up from the purchased 5L size!

Asda do a own brand 5w40 that meets vw 505.01 spec, its in a gold bottle and I think £20 for 5l

I only use quantum in my tfsi and I get it from the dealer at nearly £40 because I never order it in advance, think I'll get one off eBay and just store it, much cheaper.

VW 505.01 specification oils are especially for "Pumpe-Düse" (unit injector or "PD" engines). It is vitally important to use an oil meeting either this, the VW 506.01 (long life) specification or the VW 507.00 specification to avoid damaging the cam/diesel pumps in PD engines.

For PD engined cars with a DPF, use only an oil meeting the VW 507.00 specification

The 3 options I referred to in #7 and available from Halfords, if you want to go there for convenience, are vw 507.00 approved.
