I have now had the same battery from new for nearly 9 years. Is this a normal life or have I just been lucky?

The battery in my old mkI lasted at least 9 years. Our Leon's lasted 10. In my mkII it lasted 7 years.

Pot luck really.

Dads car lasted 15 years (Renault megane mk1) but it does vary considerably

It all comes down to how they are treated.

 

Father in laws Fiesta (garaged every night) lasted 13 years, keep them outside in the freezing cold, do lots of short trips and if you get half that I will be surprised.

^^^ Plus a quality battery required in the first place.

My VRS was on the original battery when I sold it at 8yr. It was probably getting a bit weaker by then.

 

Just depends on how the car has been used I suppose. Different charging cycles will affect it differently.

Yesterday I changed the original Akuma battery in my car. I've not done it in 10 years and had VW AG stamped on it, so will be 12 years old (can't find a date). Our 2003 Fabia still has it's original Varta one and still going strong. I am very surprised how long they have lasted.

When i traded in my octavia a couple of months ago it was still on its original battery at 8 years old however last winter when it was very cold & had been left for a couple of days it only just turned over & started so i suspect it will need a new battery this winter. 

The battery in my old Mk 1 Octavia 1.8T 20V 4x4 Combi lasted around 12 years!

 

The first several years of it's life were relatively pampered  - garaged / low mileage etc.

Original Fabia battery lasted 9 years.  :sun:

Yuasa replacement 18 months. :devil:

 

Replaced under warranty fortunately.

Hope this one lasts a bit longer

10 or 11 years on my original diesel octavia battery (varta).

Bought a bosch which lasted a few months. Turns out they gave me the wrong battery!

New one in there.

2 years on my new Passat.

 

It's always kept overnight in a heated Garage, one freezing night it was outside and wouldn't start in the morning.

 

As I'd never looked at the battery since new (Hidden in a box and covered) I removed the cover to jump start it.

 

And found instead of a big beefy battery for a 2.0TDi filling the battery box was a little tiny battery that was a correct fit on a Polo three cylinder petrol.

 

Yes I was a little miffed, dealer said it must have been fitted at the factory which can sometimes happen if they need to get cars off the line and the correct battery is not available. But I did point out they had done a PDI and the first service.
