2.0 TSI EA888 Oil Separator / PCV

Featured Replies

This comes up fairly often and having reviewed lots of posts, on briskoda and beyond, there is no real definitive answer that I could find.

I had a timing chain tensioner and related pieces replaced preventatively 6 months ago. However, 6 months 7k miles later the lower cover had started to leak noticeably. I don't think it did initially, it seems to have happened towards the end of 6 months. The lower cover was replaced originally and now has been replaced again a second time (under warranty, from an independent) but it is quite a job and I wouldn't want to be paying to do that every 6 months.

I'm just wondering whether it could be a crankcase pressure issue. When reviewing a recent thread with a link to a technical Russian forum contributor on EA888 1.8TSI engines, there is some discussion in it around the oil separator and in comments at the end. Someone suggests there that there shouldn't be noticeable oil in either the pipe to the intake manifold or the pipe to the intake tract to turbo. However, I can't really work out if this is dismissed or accepted by the response......

My car does show some oil leakage around the compression clip on the intake tract as photo'd in that document indicating an issue. The connection just before reaching the turbo near the brake fluid reservoir (on RHD cars), at back of engine above the turbo. Mine doesn't look as bad as the photos, but it does weep oil there.

The Russian forum technical  document is linked in post#15 here:

Anyone with any  proven experience of a  definitive test(s) to rule a fine oil separator as defective/OK?

Oil usage isn't a problem but there is clearly oil getting in there, my concern is if there is a pressure issue given the timing cover seal failure.
