Hi, Chrome problems!

Featured Replies

Hi there, have been having problems with chrome crashing recently. Request a web page and chrome crashes often straight away, try a few times and it will then load and sometimes work ok for a session. I have already uninstalled chrome and reinstalled it but its not much better. Any ideas to try and make it reliable again? Thx

Hi what OS are you working on?

Hi Mac, windows 8

When you say crashes, it gives an error or simply stops responding?

It stops responding, has to be closed and new session started. It seems to dislike quick requests on page loading....likes to have each page fully loaded before I request a new one. It has been better today since reinstalling but still freezes but less often.

That sounds more like a memory issue.

Next time it happens, open task manager and see if the processor or ram usage is high, and what is using it.

Go to chrome settings and then about. What version number is it?

If it's not 55 then update it. Reason is 55 has a big memory reduction fix in it. I've noticed it, well I think I have :) Seem to be able to open even more tabs now :)

Could also be a chrome app or extension. Have a good look over the extensions if installed. Disable either 1 by 1 quitting between. Or turn all off then enable one by one. Process of elimination I'm afraid.

Finally, it could be one of the tabs causing a lot of usage, e.g. a youtube video page with an advert etc... those are the angles I'd pursue initially on top of those above ;)

Ok thx for the ideas, chrome is up to date V55, .....extensions.. only 3 that have always been active, and will check memory issue next time it happens.

Thx again for the input :)

Isn't this down to another windows update causing problems as usual.

Well first start of the day.......crash......restarted Chrome, checked a couple of the above ideas, no changes made but chrome has been behaving itself for the first time in 3 days. I think it spotted me looking in its inards and thought...I better start behaving myself.

So no further crashes today..problem has gone away, well thats unusual for PC's isn't it  :peek: ...now all I need is " spoke too soon"

Thx for the insights tho

Isn't this down to another windows update causing problems as usual.

Windows updates doesn't always break things. And even when it does, it's rarely the update but that there has been an underlying issue for some time on that machine which only comes to light as part of an update.

Similar things happen in Apple world too ;)

As for chrome misbehaving, as the majority of it isn't anything to do with Windows it's more likely to be a symptom of another issue. Damaged memory module, graphics card, maybe even Psu.
