Steering Wheel Covers (Yes I'm old!)

Featured Replies

Hi Guys I'm after a bit of advice, and maybe some recommendations.

My Well Loved and cherished Fabia Greenline has a slight bit of damage to the steering wheel!

Not sure how or when it happened, but Every time I turn the wheel, I can feel some rough gouges (at the 5 o'clock position on the wheel) and they are starting to annoy me!

I've been looking at Wheel covers, but I don't like the 'ready fit' ones, it might as well be pink and fluffy in my eyes, they just look so chavvy and 'chunky'

I've been looking at the 'Lace up' types (not the wrap around the wheel ones from the 70/80's) and was wondering if anyone here had any experience of them, how hard they are to 'lace' and do they look/feel any good!!

Any help would be appreciated!

I had a lace-up steering wheel cover on my 1968 Ford Escort 1100.  Never used one since.  Just looked on Amazon and was amazed how many are availabe.

Get the steering wheel replaced?

Could even upgrade it to a nice leather MFSW if you wanted :)

Get a photo of it, if you can so we can have a proper look. If it's light marking, one of those 'Magic Sponges' can work wonders.

Otherwise (presuming it's a leather wheel) it can be sanded back and re-dyed if necessary. Kits for this are readily available.

So you avoid an unsightly cover, or the expense of a replacement.

Replacements aren't necessarily expensive. I picked up a leather MFSW off a Yeti for £70 n it was £40 to have it fitted.

Point still stands.

£110 is still quite a bit more, compared to sorting out the existing one - as long as the damage isn't too serious.

Thats leather mfsw with buttons on both sides, coded in though.

The standard greenline one i think (as its basically an SE) will just be plastic none mf. They can be had for £40 there abouts.

If you're getting other benefits from the swap, in terms of an upgrade - could be worth it :)

Especially as my tricks that I've used on other wheels, only work on leather :D

That's the type of thing!!! I'll have a lookie!  :notme:

Can't really afford the cost of a replacement wheel or even (as someone on a different forum suggested) getting it professionally trimmed!!
