Door glass replacement

Featured Replies

Just a quick one. When replacing the glass do you fit from above or below, if the former, from the outter or inner side?

More detail, been having issues with the window for a while (going down when it should go up etc.) Part way through my 4hour trip last night, drop the window, when I go to put it up, there was a massive cracking noise and it wouldn't move. When I got home I was able to pull it up manually, it goes nearly all the way up shy of an inch (something stopping it ..?) Moving the regulator results in noises like smashed glass moving.

So trying to get hold of replacement glass at the min. Anyone know if there are any scrapyards left in Sheffield?

Are you sure the window has broken?

Broken cables in the regulator then hitting against the glass can sound very similar.

I found the same out on my old car.

Pretty sure it's the glass, just remember the word I needed was crunching. But now you are making me doubt myself..

If the glass was broken there wouldn't be anything at all to move up and down, it would be in a million pieces on the floor.

It sounds like a crunched up winder mechanism. Hard to know exactlywhat you need until it's stripped down and inspected.

I did wonder about that. Will make it my mission to strip it down asap, unfortunately under docs orders at the min to not do much.

Removing and installing door window
Removing
– Remove assembly carrier ⇒ 57-1 page 2.
– Release inside window weatherseal from the flange.
– Remove window pane from the door.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order.

And that's from the official Skoda Workshop Manual :D

I'm assuming it's removed and installed from outside the car.

The glass comes out easily from the inside top once you've released the clamps holding it to the broken regulator mechanism.

I found that in the Skoda manual as well. It's absolutely useless :D

Well it's amazing how much the cables sound like broken glass after they have snapped!

New carrier from ecp and all is well...

However, it's still misbehaving a little, will drop fine but the one touch back up stops halfway and goes back down.

Wondering if there is too much friction on the glass? Would it be worth dropping some type of grease on the side edges when it's fully down? If so, what type?

Use silicon spray on the guide channels, easy peasy.

I had this misbehaving problem on my daughters fabia .After fitting a new carrier/regulator she was worried about the window not going back up at the mcdonalds drive through bless her. I slackened off the two 10mm bolts that clamp the bottom of the window and gave it a jiggle and this did the trick. Although next time ( I'm sure there will be a next time) I will do what sepulchrave said and silicone spray the guide channels for piece of mind.

Exactly what I was thinking. Cheers!

Get the glass up to the top, and slack off the glass clamps through the access holes. Then tighten them again. It sounds like the clamps are ever so slightly in the wrong place on the bottom edge of the glass.

Well, I will be having a look at the clamps anyway but, a bit of lubricant has solved the issue, and it's now moving up without issue and at the same speed as the drivers side.

Cheers!
