Headlights - fullbeam cuts out dipped beam?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I've just taken delivery of my Fabia mk3 SE 1.2 tsi 90 and I've noticed that when I pull the headlight control on the steering column towards me (temporary high beam) it seems to use both full beam and dipped beam bulbs giving pretty good lighting on dark Sussex lanes, however, when I push the same control forward for normal full beam it seems to switch off the dipped beam meaning there's ok lighting further ahead but not much just in front of the car. Is it normal to have a difference between temporary and normal full beam? Has anyone else had this 'problem' (if that's what it is)?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I've just been out to check mine (1.2 SEL) and they seem to work as expected; i.e. both full and dipped beam on both temporary and normal full beam setting.

Maybe worth a visit to the dealer.

No - the dips should stay on with fulls.

With the standard H4 headlights, it's normal. The dual filament H4 bulb would generate too much heat if both the main and dipped beam is turned on for longer time.

The S and SE have dual filament bulbs (H4). They work fine, but you can't have both filaments on for a long time as sifre says.

Thanks all for your advice and for clarifying this for me - mine do have the H4 bulbs so I guess I better not hold the control in the 'flash' mode for too long to get better lighting! Really appreciate people taking the time to respond!

I shouldn't worry about having both filaments running for a short time. Back in the day I had a Morris Marina and an Ital where I rigged the switch so both filaments would be on when on main. I had H4 conversion headlights instead of sealed beams, but, of course, they were standard H4s not uprated ones.
