Steering issue

Featured Replies

I've had a few steering issues with my Fabia over the past few months.

I had a bent rack end on the lhs so had that and the tre changed and had it aligned. Seemed to have sorted stuff and then it had a slight knocking so had the top mounts changed.

All of a sudden the other day I did tyre pressures all round and now it seems like it pulls slightly to the left and when you are driving straight, and move the wheels to the left slightly, it doesn't want to self centre the wheel?

It's does when you turn it right.

I have H&R 40mm springs fitted and it does seem to have some excessive camber on the front weirdly, always has since they were fitted.

I assume there not handed or anything daft?

Really at a loss.

Nothing looks bent or out of alignment under there and I'm seriously considering putting some standard springs back on the front to see if it sorts stuff out again

Any pointers folks.

Pulling to the left is common I think on fabias, at least Monte Carlos and possibly ones with 17s I had dunlops fitted from new and it pulled to the left, they fitted pirellis and did alignment then it was ok. Since I've put dunlops back on it pulls to the left again but they were free so I can put up with it until I replace them.

Yeah I have just done a bit of digging about on here for old threads and found there is an issue about pulling left.

I have Uniroyal Rainsport 3 and they haven't really caused any issues until recently.

The many many Pulling to the Left threads covers al that, bit you covered it your self and had alignment done.

Look at the shape of your rear tyre now.

They often take on a squint appearance after a time because that is just how they are, and the rear can not be adjusted.

Try the front Wheels / Tyres moved to the back, back to front before spending more money if you think mechanically the car is OK.

Are those ridiculous weights off the rear passenger side crash bar?

Hi mate.

I was contemplating swapping the wheels round today but wasn't too sure if it would help.

As far as I know the weights are still on the rear.

It just seems really odd how it's come about since doing the tyre pressures.

Just to add. When the top mounts were done the other day they didn't retrack etc.

Might that be worthwhile?

It's been ok for like a week or so after doing until now

I would say it will be worth while after the top mounts have been done.

?

What tyre pressures do you run?

I just put them at 33psi all round and if they feel not planted drop them a little.

I'm sure the procedure would be to get the tracking re-done but nothing much moves when doing top mounts

  • Author

Yeah I think it needs tracking again as they took shockers out to do them so surely it would need redoing

So tyre pressures at 32 all round. I wouldn't say is cured the pull to the left. I think tracking is needed. And I'm going to get standard springs put back in.

Steve I would get it 4 wheel aligned on a hunters rig some decent places will show you if the alignment is out and if it isn't won't charge you.

Please put up a link to any place that does a Hunter Alignment check and does not charge if no adjustment is needed.

Thanks I'll see what I can get done.

Funnily though I drove 60 odd miles last night and it seemed back to Normal with 32psi all round and the same this morning on the way to work. So time will tell. Still going to get it aligned and possibly standard springs back in for now.

I very much doubt it will be the springs mate. I've put h&r on mine and had it hunter aligned at......... kwik fit of all places. They did a great job tbf but I do know the guys there, they do a lot of track day stuff on the qt...mine was pulling to the left before springs and then slightly better affter I fitted but alignment was most defo out... Mine is on the standard conti 2's and I can't wait To wear them out so I can put something decent on.

This is the before and after on the hunter

Do your fronts seem to have a fair bit of camber after fitting the H&R springs?

Edited by S27VEJ

Don't seem to. There is more than before tbh but it sits so bloody high on standard vrs springs I'm not surprised. There will always be some more camber when lowering because it pulls up the bottom arms in their natural arc slightly. Tyres are wearing ok on front tho and there's nothing wrong with a bit of neg camber ;-)

Looking at the alignment they seem to have neg 1 degree. That's not a lot really but it is nice to have some

Revisit the top mount fitting first.

On certain makes - although the top mounts get bolted up (Three bolts in triangular layout usually) there are correct positioning rules to be observed. Perhaps the most classic example would be the Citroen C3 - its an easy mistake to make.

So as a first step, just make sure that the centre from the strut is dead centre within the panel aperture.

My neighbour said to me why had the steering wheel position changed when he had two (C3) top mounts replaced. I looked at it for him to find one mount had been misfitted - we both went down to his local Citroen dealer, and when told that they had incorrectly fitted the mount - their response was 'its impossible to do this'.

When we eventually persuaded them to look under the bonnet the difference side to side was immediately apparent.  A rather red faced and chastened mechanic (or pretend mechanic) turned it round and all was restored to the correct wheel position.

The MK2 doesn't use the 3 bolt fixings, the strut goes through a hole in the strut top then the top hat bit holds them together from above

& some with lowered Mk2 Fabia use a different part, or modify one.

Check out the threads that explain what and why.

EDIT.

Looking for the thread on the Polo Cup but not finding it while on phone.

It is in a Lowering Options thread in this section i seem to remember.

The camber seems fairly obvious in mine for some reason. It's been there since the springs were fitted.

I'll have to investigate the topmount part numbers to see if the right or wrong have been fitted.

It is starting to wear the inner edges of the tyres I've noticed so hence why I think I might just go back to standard springs and see if that will make any difference
