Fitting Rearguard and Silguard - any tips?

Featured Replies

Hello!

So as delivery day approaches, my mind is turning to things I will need to do after it arrives.

I've got a set of Silguards and a Rearguard sat here already. Actually I have two sets as my mum has just copied us and bought herself a Yeti too - Immitation/flattery I guess!

So, I will be charged with fitting both. I've got the manufacturers instructions and they supply the prep solution sachets etc. They fit with 3M tape.

My question is, are there any tips for getting them on square and perfect as it a bit of a 'one shot' deal? How have any of you chaps approached fitting yours? Are there any common pitfalls to look out for?

Any info much appreciated.

Dry fit them and mark where they should be with masking tape.

Don't do it when it is freezing cold!

I used number plate black double sided tape as I transferred the rear guard from yeti  1 its about 1.5/2.0mm thick, I put strips everywhere, others have complained they drop off eventually, had the first for 3.5 yeays, and present for 2+ years without probs so far, as graham said do it in the dry pref in garage perhaps with a heater elevating the temp therin!

bon chance!

As already said by other, dry fit and make sure the area is very clean.  I used the supplied tape with not problems but get it right first time, the tape does stick!

Given its blinking freezing outside and i don't have a garage I can get a car into due to there being an 800kg metalwork lathe sat in the doorway, could I warm things up with a hairdryer? warm the new piece and the bumper, or just the new piece?

I'd be VERY careful about doing that!! Personally I would say you will be much better waiting until the weather warms up a bit.

Well I decided to chance it as if I leave it until the warm weather, the dog and the kids will have destroyed it!

Put the bits in the box on top the radiator inside overnight so they stayed warm. Washed (using hot water - outside hot tap a good thing to have) and dried the car, then dried it more with hairdryer. Marked position with masking tape and cleaned with prep sachet, then dried again with hairdryer. Took out bits one-by-one and warmed them some more with the hairdryer, paying attention to the adhesive strips.

Then, took my heart in my hands and went for it. They stuck like the proverbial to a blanket, no way were they coming off. In fact one rear silgaurd went on wrong and I had to use dental floss to saw it off and start again - thankfully I had bought some extra 3M tape as i knew I'd mess one of them up.

Very impressed with the fit and finish. Had to pop into Skoda last week and they were impressed too - the service/parts manager admitted that often aftermarket stuff like this is better than Skoda own.

I don't think they'll come off any time soon if the struggle with the wrongly placed one was anything to go by!

The Skoda mudguards were easy too, just a shame the middle screw at the back isn't long enough. I have a pack of 100 longer ones coming via e-bay, so that should fix that. I'll check they are OK, and if so then if people want a couple put in the post to them let me know and I'll do so, FOC.
